Viva La Vida Aviva

Aviva Drescher

Meet Real Housewives’ of New York Aviva Drescher

Having joined the cast of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York in season five, the beautiful and charming Aviva is so much more than what you see on the hit reality show. She is a wife, mother to four precious children, a REAL housewife, a business woman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Aviva is “Living the Life!”

Passionate about everything she does, but extremely evident in her charity work for amputees with The One Step Ahead Foundation. Aviva lost her leg at age six and it has never stopped her from accomplishing anything and everything she sets her mind to. Strong and determined, this lady is more beautiful on the inside than she is on the outside. After the recent Boston Marathon bombings, she opened her heart to the victims, that’s just what she does.

How did you get involved with the Real Housewives of New York?

Through a mutual friend of Bethenny Frankel’ and the rest is history!

What sets you apart from the other housewives?

Each one of us is different in many ways. I sometimes feel like a goldfish swimming with the sharks. I was a rookie when I came on board; the other ladies are much shrewder than I am. I don’t feel like I’m a celebrity nor am I a diva. My intention was to make great television, unfortunately for the sake of drama; we are not always represented in our true form, don’t believe everything you see. My biggest reason for wanting to be on the show was to inspire other amputees, to be their voice.

What do you do for fun?

We have close friends that we enjoy spending time with and celebrating joyous occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Who or what is most important to you, personally and professionally?

My family is number one! After that, my charities and the work I do daily for amputees.

What is your most memorable Housewives’ experience?

The day I met Andy Cohen! Not only is he the executive producer of the show, but a wonderful human being.

When you were five years old, what was your dream to be when you grew up?

A ballerina

Aviva Drescher and FamilyWhat are your personal and professional mottos?

Personal would have to be “why be normal, everyone interesting has a past.” Professional is “Cease the day, life is not a dress rehearsal!”

Three words that best describe you are:

Silly, Assertive and Compassionate

Who do you owe your success to?

Any good that I am today, comes from positive reinforcement, love and encouragement from my parents and my husband

Have most of your dreams come true so far?

Yes, even more than I ever dreamed possible!

When Aviva was six years-old, she was in a farm accident when her left foot got severely hurt at a friend’s upstate New York dairy farm. A few months later her leg was amputated as a result of that accident. Aviva has never let this tragedy define who she is.

Aviva has a solid education. She attended New York’s The Fieldston School as a child and went on to earn a Bachelors of Arts degree from Vassar College, a Masters in French Literature from New York University and a Juris Doctorate from The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

At a chance meeting at Bed Bath & Beyond, Aviva a single mother at the time met Investment Banker Reid Drescher as their young children played together in the aisles. It was only a matter of time before the two got married and grew their family together. The Dreschers now have the quintessential contemporary modern family with four children – Harrison, 11, Veronica, 10, Hudson, 5, and Sienna, 2.

Aviva is also passionate about working with different philanthropies. Whether it is her role as the National Spokesperson for One Step Ahead, an organization for amputees, her work with Cancer Schmancer/Trash Cancer alongside her cousin Fran Drescher, Live4Life a charity that raises funds for Melanoma research and recently signing on as the ambassador for the So Gay So What Campaign (part of the Shine Out Music Festival) as a straight ally. Aviva continually teaches her family the importance of giving back.

Leaving His Mark

Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath Talks Life, Love & Fatherhood

“In a million years, I didn’t think I had the talent to become successful,” declares Mark McGrath, the lead singer of the pop rock band Sugar Ray. “I was not put on this earth to be a singer.”

Panache Vue' Magazine - Cover - November 2012

But the 44-year-old music maker has defied his own doubts about his potential to front a band that has left an indelible mark on pop culture with hit songs like “Fly,” “Every Morning” and “When It’s Over,” tunes that still get radio airplay nearly a decade after their release.

“I’m influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys and the Sex Pistols, bands that don’t have the greatest voices in the world. But there’s something about them as a collective that makes them work,” proclaims McGrath, who has been Sugar Ray’s front man for more than a quarter-century. “And that let me think that I could get on stage and make an ass of myself and sing a few songs.”

It’s that mindset that led to McGrath’s discovery in the first place. During his high school days in Newport Beach, California, he attended a party where his favorite band, The Tories, was performing.

“The singer didn’t know the words to AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’ and I did, so they let me sing,” remembers McGrath, whose rock-star good looks would lead to him being named People’s Sexiest Rocker in 1998. “I was drunk and I screamed the lyrics, and I dove into the pool when I was done. And Stan [Frazier] and Rodney [Sheppard] thought, ‘If we ever go hard edge, that might be our guy!’”

Mark McGrath and Family

McGrath was that guy when The Tories broke up and re-formed as the Shrinky Dinx in the late ‘80s. The band would eventually change its name to Sugar Ray after signing with Atlantic Records. And nearly a decade later McGrath and company would strike gold with the insta-classic “Fly,” a song on Sugar Ray’s sophomore album Floored.

“I hated it at first ‘cause it was so different than anything we were doing,” recalls McGrath, who retooled the song at the request of a longtime friend. “I rearranged the song, added some vocals. It slowly started taking shape; and then producer David Kahne added his magical touches. And we thought we had something special. But I never knew how big it was going to be!”

Following its release in the summer of 1997, “Fly” would become the band’s first massive hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart and the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. Sugar Ray would release subsequent hits like “Someday,” “Falls Apart” and a cover of Joe Jackson’s “Is She Really Going Out with Him?”

“It’s such a blessing still hearing these songs on the radio after all these years, learning what they mean to people and seeing how they react when we perform them,” asserts McGrath, who performed for the third straight year at the Eat to the Beat concert series during the 2012 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival in Orlando. “I’m honored and humbled to have a few songs that really resonated with people.”

But McGrath’s career has taken him beyond music. In 2004, he became the co-host of Extra after a producer noticed his work hosting various VH1 and MTV programs and saw his potential as an entertainment news anchor.

“She must’ve really believed in me ‘cause I was learning in front of America,” says McGrath with a laugh. “And they were really tolerant of my learning skills. I remember six months after working on the show I walked into 7/11 and this heavily tattooed guy came up to me. I really thought he was going to punch me in the face! But he said, ‘Dude, you’re getting better. You sucked when you started, but you’re getting good!’”

But after a four-year stint at Extra, a gig hosting Don’t Forget the Lyrics! and competing on The Celebrity Apprentice, McGrath’s life would forever change on April 29, 2010, with the birth of Lydon Edward and Hartley Grace, his adorable twins with longtime love Carin Kingsland.

“I’m a dad first and foremost, that’s what I do.” says McGrath, who admits he was glad he waited until he was 42 to start a family because he was “pretty selfish” professionally and personally in his 20’s and 30’s. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but the greatest thing I’ve ever done. You get little moments when they’ll look at you, hug you, say they love you. And that’s what it’s about.”

This September, McGrath married Kingsland, whom he describes as his best friend and soul mate, at an intimate ceremony at Santa Barbara’s historic San Ysidro Ranch.

“It was like the final piece of my personal puzzle,” says McGrath, who has been with Kingsland for 18 years. “I kind of did everything backwards. We started living together first, had kids and then got married. But my life is complete now. We’re a team; we’re a family unit. We got all the craziness out of the way, survived all that. So we’re pretty indestructible at this point!”

It’s that sense of completeness that’s now fueling McGrath’s next fire… the recording of a solo album.

“It’s helped me be hungry again… to hustle, make music and enjoy life. So I’m just gonna make a Mark McGrath record in 2013, at my own pace. It may have five songs; it may have 15,” announces McGrath, who recorded a duet with Shania Twain on the song “Party for Two.” “The Mark McGrath band will always play Sugar Ray hits. After all, I wrote those songs and sang them. But it’s time to pepper new music into the set.”

If McGrath’s determination and commitment to becoming a singer and finding his voice during those early years is any indication, there’s no doubt McGrath will find success as a solo artist. After all, he’s the same artist who gained acclaim singing the lyric “I just wanna fly.” And fly he shall.

Blonde Ambition

Meet Real Housewives’ Trendy Tycoon Gretchen Rossi

She didn’t join the cast of The Real Housewives of Orange County until the fourth season, but Gretchen Rossi has become one of the Bravo series’ breakout stars. It’s something she credits to her on camera authenticity.

“I’m not anybody different than who I am in my daily life,” professes the 34-year-old blonde bombshell who was recently named a “Hot Housewife” by US Weekly. “I don’t switch to someone else because the cameras are on. You see the good, bad and ugly with me. And I believe that makes me more relatable.”

Gretchen Rossi

Gretchen Rossi

There’s no denying the California girl with striking good looks and an effervescent personality was born to be on camera.

“I was constantly entertaining,” says Rossi, who grew up in Southern California. “I would come down during my parents’ dinner parties and have a full getup on. And I’d entertain everyone by singing and dancing.”

Despite her ability to engage audiences, Rossi didn’t pursue a career in entertainment right away.

“Growing up people approached me about modeling and acting,” recalls Rossi. “But my parents were very cautious of that world, so they didn’t let me do any of it. Instead they encouraged me go to college and pursue a more secure career.”

So Rossi, who was over her parents telling her what she couldn’t do, decided to attend college out of state.

“I got accepted to three schools… One in Washington, one in Colorado and Baylor [in Texas],” remembers Rossi. “I realized it rained a lot in Washington. And my parents talked about moving to Colorado. So, I picked Baylor!”

Gretchen Rossi

Gretchen Rossi

Rossi, who has always enjoyed figuring out what makes people tick, pursued a degree in psychology.

“It just seemed like a natural path for me,” says Rossi. “I was always trying to fix everybody; I always had this innate need to help people.”

But after graduating from college and moving back to California, Rossi quickly realized finding psychology work was no small feat. So she worked at a children’s gym—until the 9/11 attacks propelled her to make changes.

“I wrote a list of everything I wanted to do should something like that happen again,” states Rossi. “And I started checking things off, including getting my real estate license.”

License in hand, Rossi became a top-selling agent with Coldwell Banker after working intense 80-hour weeks.

“I loved it and was good at it,” asserts Rossi. “It was such a lucrative business for me, so I continued to work in that field.”

It’s that experience that led to Rossi’s Housewives casting. While attending a dinner party, she sat at the same table as her current boyfriend, Slade Smiley, and his then-girlfriend Jo De La Rosa, one of the original Orange County Housewives.

“I was being my silly, flamboyant self and Slade and Jo looked at each other and said ‘She’d be perfect for the show,’” recalls Rossi, who had no interest in appearing on Housewives until her late fiancé Jeff Beitzel persuaded her to reconsider. “So I went to the casting interview and before you knew it, I was on the show!”

Following a tumultuous first season of feeling like an outsider, Rossi has finally hit her stride on the show.

“I think the cast members have come to realize who I am,” declares Rossi. “As we’ve seen with Tamra [Barney], she’s really changed her tune towards me because she got to know me. It’s taken a bit for them to like me, but we’re finally there.”

Something that didn’t take Rossi long: becoming the show’s style star who was constantly asked about her hair, makeup and clothes.

“Fans got upset that they couldn’t afford the products I was using. So I realized there was a niche in the market,” says Rossi, who launched her Gretchen Christine Cosmetics line in 2009. “I wanted to bring high quality makeup to the everyday woman at an affordable price. And that’s what I’ve accomplished.”

Following her cosmetics success, Rossi launched her Gretchen Christine Collection of handbags and accessories.

“ShopNBC asked me to debut the line with them; I sold 1,000 bags in 50 minutes and we’ve been moving along ever since,” says Rossi, who plans to expand her empire into new areas. “It comes down my individual style and bringing that to the everyday woman.”

But Rossi isn’t stopping there… She’s creating a direct selling program that could give Avon and Mary Kay a run for their money.

“I’m actually meeting with consultants to make sure that’s the right next move,” discloses Rossi. “We’re developing a great program that could employ a lot of women in America.”

Rossi, who recently showcased her Pink Collection for the Breast Cancer Charities of America at New York Fashion Week, knows there’s more to her success than airtime on Housewives.

“If I wasn’t a hard worker with a strong work ethic, it never would’ve happened,” acknowledges Rossi. “It comes down to having drive, focus and dedication.”

Since Rossi has all that in spades, there’s no doubt she’ll be checking off the next item on her bucket list: creating a multi-million dollar empire.

Meet Tampa Bay’s Most Eligible Bachelor Nick Peterson

From Baseball to the Bachelor Pad

It should come as no surprise that Nick Peterson’s star has been on the rise since his appearance last summer on The Bachelorette. After all, the Odessa, Florida native has all-American good looks and charming personality. And even though they didn’t help him win Ashley Hebert’s heart, they did capture America’s attention.

Nick Peterson - Panache Vue' Magazine - Cover

Nick Peterson

“It’s opened a lot of doors,” admits Peterson, who is appearing on ABC’s The Bachelor Pad this summer for a second chance at love and the prospect of winning $250,000. “The national recognition has helped me build my name up and get my name out.”

But gaining popularity isn’t something new for Peterson. The 27-year-old former professional baseball player actually started making a name for himself on the diamond while growing up in Florida.

“I was consistently one of the better players on the field, and so I stuck with it,” recalls Peterson, who only discovered his natural talent for baseball after a horrendous attempt at playing soccer. “My dad was always out there practicing with me, pushing me.”

Peterson went on to become a superstar pitcher at Jesuit High School, Tampa’s all-male Catholic school with a rich history of turning out all-star athletes.

“In high school I was only a pitcher; it’s what I was best at. I wasn’t going to be hitting, I can tell you that,” jokes Peterson. “I enjoyed being in control of the game, having the ball, being the guy in charge.”

Nick Peterson

Nick Peterson

Peterson’s stellar skills on the mound landed him a scholarship to Appalachian State University in North Carolina, where he played ball for two years before transferring to the University of Tampa. In 2006, Peterson was drafted by the New York Yankees.

“Hearing your name come up on the draft, it brings tears to your eyes,” admits Peterson, who was called up in the 12th round as the 374th overall pick. “It’s every boys dream; and you work so hard for it your whole life.”

Peterson spent two years in the minor leagues playing with the Yankees’ Staten Island and Charleston, South Carolina farm teams. He then went on to become an independent athlete with teams in Alberta, Canada and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“Independent ball is like what arena football is to the NFL,” explains Peterson. “You’re paid, but there’s no moving up throughout the organization. You’re hoping a Major League Baseball team will pick you out and put you in their organization.”

But after two years chasing his Major League dreams, Peterson decided it was time to move on to the next chapter of his life.

“I didn’t want to be 35 and still playing independent baseball,” says Peterson, who returned to the University of Tampa to complete his studies and get his bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship. “I gave it my best shot; and it felt like a mature decision to move on. Obviously I didn’t make it all the way to the top, but it was the best four years of my life.”

Right around the same time he graduated from college in the summer of 2010, Peterson went on to become a certified personal trainer. And later that year he launched Peety’s Personal Training, located at Body Shapers Private Studio in Tampa.

“I always told myself that if I didn’t make it to the big leagues, I would really go at it hard,” states Peterson, whose former body-builder father introduced him to working out at an early age. “I didn’t really think I’d be doing it for a living. I thought I’d be doing it for fun, for myself. But I love my job!”

So what can current and future clients expect from Peterson?

“I sing,” kids Peterson, who tends to break out into song while whipping his clients into shape. “It’s a high intensity workout, complete with circuit training. I’ve kind of carried on my father’s body building techniques, and I use a lot of them in my training. It’s all one-on-one; I build a personal relationship with each client.”

Nick Peterson - Panache Vue' Magazine

Nick Peterson

And Peterson’s client list continues to grow. A year after his Bachelorette days, he’s still seeing a spike in business, as well as a few comical calls from admirers.

“I have some clients who are still with me because they saw me on the show,” says Peterson. “But I also get a lot of teenage girls who call to set up an appointment only to show up, giggle, and say hello and leave.”

Meanwhile, the still-single Peterson hasn’t given up on love. He’s still searching for an outgoing Christian woman with a similar passion for health and fitness. And once he finds her, he has two ideas for the perfect first date.

“I am a country music fan, so I love heading to the amphitheater, laying out a blanket and listening to some great live music,” proclaims Peterson. “Line dancing is another favorite; so either of those would be great dates.”

But until Mrs. Right comes along, Peterson plans to concentrate on expanding his business through online personal training while never taking his good fortune for granted.

“God has blessed me in so many ways,” affirms Peterson. “I’ve been really blessed with my baseball career, a wonderful family that supports me the whole way through, my own business and The Bachelorette.”

With that appreciation for life’s blessings, strong work ethic and charming personality, you can rest assured Peterson won’t be a Bachelor for long.

Introducing Chef Extraordinaire Ingrid Hoffmann

Ingrid Hoffmann may be an internationally acclaimed culinary expert with a loyal base of followers in English and Spanish, but “chef” isn’t the official title you’ll read on her impressive resume. The host of Delicioso— an hour-long lifestyle cooking show on Univision—primarily considers herself a “professional eater.”

“My love of food really starts with a love of eating and sharing the table,” professes the 47-year-old cookin g star who was born and raised in Colombia and lived in the Netherlands with her family before moving to Miami as an adult. “It was very important to my mother that we always share a meal at the table as a family.”

Ingrid Hoffmann

Ingrid Hoffmann

But Hoffmann’s mother—a Cordon Bleu-trained chef who ran a catering business from her home kitchen and later opened her own restaurant—did more than incite a passion for food in her daughter. Through hands on lessons, Yolanda Ibarnegaray taught Ingrid the art of cooking as a child.

“I used to pull up a little stool to the stove, so I could reach the range and cook steaks and shrimp,” recalls Hoffmann, who now cooks the food of 22 Latin countries, including Spain. “I’d make this shrimp dish—my father’s brandied shrimp recipe that today is a staple and still one of my favorite meals.”

It should come as no surprise that traditional children’s fare like chicken nuggets and fish sticks were never served in Hoffmann’s home.

“Kids who’d come to my house would comment on the strange food; and I never really understood why it was weird,” admits Hoffmann, who remembers eating Indonesian food for about a year after her mom spent time in the Southeast Asian country learning how to cook their cuisine.

“She had this rule that wherever we went in the world, she had to go to the market and a cooking class with a local chef. She always said that you learned so much about a culture through ingredients. Looking back now, it really was like the United Nations of food at our house!”

It’s no wonder Hoffmann—who isn’t a classically trained chef—began developing her own flavorsome recipes with a similar eclectic spirit.

“Ignorance has been bliss,” declares Hoffmann. “My mixes of food really are unorthodox, which may not have been the case had I been classically trained. Instead, I can just have fun creating foods with a great balance of textures, colors and flavors.”

It’s that mindset that led Hoffmann to open her own restaurant called Rocca, which was the first Miami eatery to feature tabletop cooking on heated lava rocks.

“It was an incredible experience; it helped me be taken seriously as a chef,” proclaims Hoffmann, who has no plans to open another restaurant anytime soon. “I wasn’t able to be creative and develop recipes. It was about running a business and dealing with the bank and employees. And, it just took all the fun out of cooking!”

But the restaurant experience did help Hoffmann break into television at a local Miami station, where she shared her recipes with the public. That would lead to regular cooking segments on Univision’s morning show and a series of multi-page culinary stories in Buen Hogar, the Spanish version of Good Housekeeping.

“When I first started, no one was really focused on Latin food,” states Hoffmann, who launched her bilingual Delicioso brand with Simply Delicioso on the Food Network and the Cooking Channel, as well as Un Minuto Delicioso on Galavision. “My philosophy is everyday food with a Latin twist, something people can easily prepare that’s healthy and fresh. I believe in trying to eat as natural as possible, but with great flavor!”

That commitment to healthy cooking with comfort and ease led to Hoffmann partnering with T-Fal to develop her own Latin-influenced cookware and appliance line, Simply Delicioso by Ingrid Hoffmann, which includes a paella pan, calderos of different sizes and a pressure cooker.

“My cookware line comes from the same place as my recipes; I’m all about practical living,” asserts Hoffmann. “I’m always thinking about how to make life easier… how to help people save time and money and still eat healthy.”

It’s a never-ending mission for the hard-working Hoffmann, who is currently writing a book that she calls “very personal” while developing appetizing recipes and culinary content for her multi-platform Delicioso brand. But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s not glamorous work; it’s a lot of sacrifice,” states Hoffmann. “But I do it for so many hours a day because I love what I do!”

It’s that commitment to sharing her passion for cooking and entertaining with the world that has made Hoffmann simply the best bilingual expert in Latin cuisine.

Meet HGTV’s Event Planner Extraodinaire Dina Manzo

Life of the Party

She may have chosen to leave The Real Housewives of New Jersey during the hit Bravo series’ second season, but Dina Manzo never really left the public eye. Instead the noted interior designer, event planner and philanthropist maximized on her status as a beloved reality TV star to expand her business empire and become one of HGTV’s most popular personalities.

Dina Manzo

Dina Manzo

“It’s so amazing; I truly feel like part of the family,” declares the 40-year-old charismatic superwoman about her experience as the cable network’s newest star. “I have a voice and people are listening; I love what I do!”

Manzo—who didn’t plan on returning to television after Housewives—is now starring in her own HGTV series. Launched last September, Dina’s Party spotlights her impressive interior design and event planning skills. In each episode, Manzo and her team transform a client’s space into something singular and stunning to celebrate an important moment or occasion.

“I love the challenge that comes right after that first inspiration, that first idea,” admits Manzo. “It’s such a rewarding feeling to bring that vision to life and celebrate the finished product. It’s so fast-paced and every week brings something new and different. I feel more creative than ever!”

Manzo’s ceaseless creativity isn’t some newfound talent though; it’s actually a gift she inherited from her mother.

“She was all about making our home a lovely place to be,” recalls Manzo, the youngest of 11 children. “I grew up watching her paint walls and make curtains; and I remember being very young and redoing my own bedroom with my stuffed animals and moving everything around once a week. It was not normal!”

Dina Manzo

Dina Manzo

Despite that natural talent, Manzo didn’t pursue a career in interior design and event planning right away. Instead she worked as a makeup artist, something she might still be doing had her doctor not ordered her to go on bed rest during her pregnancy.

“I was bored out of my mind and realized I needed to do something, so I started taking basic interior design classes,” remembers Manzo, who later continued her studies while working for a furniture company called Expressions. “But I quickly learned that in this industry, you either have a natural talent or you don’t.”

Realizing her true calling, a self-assured Manzo launched her design career with complete conviction. She even side-stepped small jobs to work on “mega mansions.”

“I’d help build a 20,000 square-foot home from the ground up with the builder and the architect,” states Manzo. “It was really interesting to start from the foundation and carry the feeling through the entire house, and I’m glad I had that experience. It has helped me in all aspects of design, knowing what really goes into the structure of a home, the layout and paying attention to the details.”

It’s that meticulousness that led Manzo to transition from interior design to event planning. Along with executing events with her then-boyfriend Tommy—a co-owner of Housewives haunt The Brownstone—Manzo planned her own wedding, which was featured on the VH1’s My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding.

“When I accomplished it and actually made the place look gorgeous, I realized I was pretty damn good at event planning,” proclaims Manzo. “I went from planning a wedding ceremony for 50 to one for 750 people, all in a matter of four weeks with VH1 cameras following my every move. And, I realized I had a natural gift.”

So in 2005, Manzo wrapped up her projects, phased out her design business and launched her event planning company, Designer Affair, where even her 16-year-old daughter Lexi lends a hand.

“She helps set up parties,” says the proud mother. “She loves my team; they’re like her big brothers and sisters. She’s a part of it all and it’s working out great!” But there’s more to Manzo’s life than party planning. She’s also the founder of Project Ladybug, a non-profit organization that enriches the lives of children receiving treatment for serious and life-threatening illnesses.

Dina Manzo - Party Planning

“I toured the hospital where my husband and daughter were born, and I saw a need for these children who were coming for treatment with no winter coats and no shoes on their feet,” remembers Manzo. “It just broke my heart and I thought this is who I want to help. So I said, ‘I’m an event planner and I throw a damn good party, so why not throw one for a great cause.’ And, the charity has grown by leaps and bound, we’re now even national!”

So what’s next for this empowered businesswoman with a heart of gold?

“I’m coming out with my own line of pillows, throws and candles; and I’m writing a lifestyle and design book,” announces Manzo. “I dream big; and I think Martha Stewart needs a younger, hipper replacement.”

It’s that passion, determination and superwoman spirit that could see Manzo unseating Martha Stewart sooner than later!

It should come as no shock that the 35-year-old star has landed a gig that allows her to create stunning spaces that inspire millions around the world. Soto inherited her considerable passion for design from her mother, Maria Soto, who ran a decorating, home staging and party planning business.

“Every weekend we would make crafts,” recalls Soto. “And I would just sit around and watch her put a room together or we would go shopping for clients. I just looked up to her and loved the whole design process. I was never bored in her presence.”

Soto credits her mother with teaching her an invaluable lesson that would lead to her developing an uncanny knack for designing breathtaking spaces, even on a limited budget.

“My mom always told me that no matter how much money you have, you can still create a beautiful space and be proud of where you live” divulges Soto, who has been featured in Time, USA Today, In Style and The New York Post. “And she would show me ways to have a beautiful home and atmosphere without breaking the bank.”

Sabrina Soto - HGTV Star - Home Design

Sabrina Soto

Surprisingly, Soto didn’t immediately pursue a career in the industry, despite taking design classes at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“I just never thought I could really make a business out of decorating,” admits Soto. “So I kind of did it on the side while I was working in real estate and marketing.”

Soto would eventually land television hosting roles for the likes of MTV and The Learning Channel, before finding her dream job on Craigslist.

“I saw this posting where they were looking for someone with television and real estate experience,” remembers Soto. “While meeting with the owner of the production company, I told him that I was also a designer and did staging work. He flipped because he was looking for a host for Get It Sold. One thing led to another and they cast me!”

In no time, Soto saw her popularity rise at HGTV. But after six seasons on the show, she knew it was time to let people see her true colors.

“If I painted one more room beige, I was going to die,” proclaims Soto, Target’s style expert for home—a role that gives her the opportunity to curate the company’s lines, put rooms together and make recommendations. “I love using bold colors on the walls in a room or through the accessories. I really love using different colors in unexpected ways!”

Along with allowing her to demonstrate her creativity through a variety of design styles, Soto’s latest show—The High Low Project—lets her work with unlimited and limited budgets in the same episode.

“I love being able to do a very high-end design and then recreate it for the budget the homeowners have,” says Soto, who believes the initial client consultation is the key to creating a perfect space, especially since they tend to contradict themselves with what they want and don’t want. “Sometimes I take a $30,000 room and turn it into a $3,000 room. To show people it’s completely doable with such a small budget—even if they get inspired by one project or one piece of the room—is wonderful!”

So what’s next for Soto? The release of her first book, Sabrina Soto Home Design: A Layer-by-Layer Approach to Turning Your Ideas into the Home of Your Dreams, in May.

“It basically takes the guesswork out of the process,” explains Soto, who had a LEED-accredited designation from the U.S. Green Building Council—one of only about 6,900 accredited interior designers worldwide. “Each chapter is a different layer and you just go through the process of how to put together a beautiful space.”

It’s just the latest chapter in the inspiring life of a design superstar living the dream while helping people around the world create their own dream homes.

Soto’s Renovation Recommendation

If you’re looking to redecorate or redesign a living space, Soto says it’s important to avoid rushing the process:

“Even though design shows are 22 minutes long, it takes a lot more planning than that,” declares Soto. “Sometimes when you rush to get it done, you make mistakes. And you spend more money than you have to. With patience comes good design and great deals!”

To the Max – Meet Iconic Artist Peter Max

Peter Max - Panache Vue Magazine

Peter Max

Peter Max may be 74-years-old, but the internationally renowned artist isn’t showing any signs of slowing down his brightly hued career, which spans a remarkable six decades.

“It comes from being very prolific and having a tremendous desire to work,” declares Max, who was born in Berlin in 1937 and lived all over the world with his parents before settling in New York in 1953. “I have this tremendous will to paint. And, it intensifi es as I come up the elevator to my studio. My heart starts pounding knowing I’m going to be at the canvas.”

There’s no denying Max’s pop culture influence. After all, his expressive works of art have become an integral part of the fabric of modern American culture with their stunning imagery and vibrant colors.

“It’s just something I love,” professes the internationally acclaimed master of pop art known for his Cosmic ‘60s style of painting. “I have a knack for putting different color combinations together in a million different ways. That’s why I have been able to create so many different beautiful posters.”

Along with painting Lady Liberty each year since the country’s bicentennial, Max has received numerous important commissions, including the creation of the nation’s first “Preserve the Environment” postage stamp and 235 border murals at entry points to Canada and Mexico. His work has even appeared on a Continental Airlines Boeing 777.

“It’s mind-boggling,” admits Max, who has served as the official artist of the 2006 U.S. Winter Olympic Team, the Super Bowl, the World Cup, the Grammy Awards, the U.S. Open, the Indy 500, the NYC Marathon and the Kentucky Derby. “I never dreamt my life would be like this. I love it all—every second of it.”

It’s hard to believe Max didn’t initially plan on becoming an art superstar. He actually wanted to study the stars. After meeting an astronomer during his early childhood summers in Tibet, Max became fascinated with all things celestial.

“We’d sit in the garden and look at these astronomy books and he’d say, ‘Have you ever seen all these stars and planets?’” recalls Max. “I just became so unbelievably interested in the universe. It just fascinated my complete being—my soul, my heart. And for all my life, I desperately wanted to become an astronomer.”

But the stars would align differently for Max, who had even taken several math and science courses to prepare for a career in science. After graduating from Brooklyn’s Lafayette High School, he was persuaded to take summer classes at Manhattan’s Art Students League of New York, where Norman Rockwell had studied.

“I got the bug and I begged my mother if I could stay in art school for the rest of the year,” remembers Max, who had taken already proven to be a budding artist after studying drawing and painting while living in places like China and Israel. “She convinced my father to let me continue studying art, despite his fears that I’d be a starving artist.”

Peter Max - Panache Vue Magazine - Paintings

Max wouldn’t go hungry. He’s open a small arts studio in Manhattan after seven years studying fi gure drawing and composition under noted painter, illustrator and muralist Frank J. Reilly; and he’d combined his love of astronomy and passion for art to create his famed Cosmic ‘60s style and launch a highly successful poster business.

“I had a printer who loved my work and allowed me to print a couple of posters and I gave him a couple of paintings ‘cause I had no money to pay him,” says Max, who has created more than 1,000 posters over the last 40 years. “He helped me sell the posters, which became hugely popular all over the world and led to a lucrative licensing career.”

Max’s art was licensed by 72 corporations and made him a household name. His rising star status led to an eight-page cover story in Life magazine, as well as appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and the Ed Sullivan Show. Since then he’s seen his work featured at more than 100 international museums and galleries and created works of art for six U. S. presidents, including Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Bill Clinton.

“In the beginning, I just couldn’t believe all the attention. It’s still pretty unbelievable,” exclaims Max. “With some of them, I’m on a phone-call basis. I’m really blessed to know such amazing people.”

Max is currently preparing for two high profi le museum shows and the completion of a highly anticipated book.

“It has about 45 stories in it, all short stories about my life—from living in China to standing in front of an empty canvas,” explains Max. “All beautiful stories.” So where does the iconic artist see himself next?

“Hopefully just where I am now; it’s a great place,” recognizes Max. “I love where I am, I love what I’m doing and every day is different. It’s a wonderful rollercoaster!”

One that doesn’t seem to show signs of decelerating as long as he’s standing in front of a canvas with paintbrush in hand.

A Display of Peter Max’s Works in Tampa Bay A collection of Peter Max’s paintings—including portraits and album covers he designed for country superstar Taylor Swift—will be exhibited and available for acquisition at Safety Harbor’s Syd Entel Galleries. The special retrospective will begin with previews on Saturday, January 14, 2012 and conclude with special appearances by Max on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2012.

Lady Sings the Blues – Meet Tampa Bay’s Most Popular Jazz Singer

Lisa Casalino - Panache CoverIt should come as no surprise that Lisa Casalino has become one of the most highly sought-after performers in Tampa Bay. After all, she’s been serenading audiences throughout Central Florida with her soulful, sultry voice for nearly 15 years.

“I’m so grateful to be able to do what I love for a living; it really doesn’t feel like work at all,” admits Casalino, who received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York at Potsdam—the same college attended by legendary opera singer Renée Fleming. “I’m doing what I love to do, what comes naturally.”

This may come as a shock, but the Long Island, New York native didn’t start singing the blues professionally right away. After graduating college and teaching in her home state for a year, Casalino moved to Florida in 1995 to launch the music program at Durant High School in Plant City.

“I thought it would be a great experience as a young teacher to open up a new school and start a music program from scratch,” recalls Casalino. “I had the best music teachers in high school. They made me love music and I wanted to give that same appreciation to others.”

During her eight-year stint at Durant High School, Casalino landed her first steady gig with the house band at Stump’s Supper Club in Channelside. In 2005, she moved into real estate to open up her schedule for more singing engagements. In less than a year, Casalino decided to focus on a full-time music career.

“Fortunately I have a lot of great friends in the Tampa Bay area who own restaurants, as well as organize events and fundraisers,” professes Casalino. “When I was ready to start singing on my own, I asked them if they’d give me a chance…and they did!”

Lisa Casalino - La France Outfit

Lisa Casalino - Tampa Bay's Most Popular Jazz Singer

Since then, Casalino’s career has hit all the right notes. Along with steady gigs at local hot spots like Timpano Italian Chophouse, Love’s Artifacts Bar and Grille and Belleair Country Club, Casalino performs at various private events, weddings and sporting events, including singing the national anthem at Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Buccaneers games. No matter the affair, Casalino strives to capture the audience’s attention.

“It’s up to me to take everyone with me on a musical journey,” proclaims the talented singer/songwriter who finds inspiration in artists who keep it real like Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews, Karen Carpenter, Kristin Chenowith and Sarah Vaughan. “If I’m in the moment and singing my heart out, whether it be a happy or sad song, then I know they’ll be right there with me note for note.”

It’s that dedication to delivering an unforgettable performance that has made Casalino such an admired jazz singer in Tampa Bay. And now she’s setting her sights on a national audience. This summer, Casalino released her debut album, “Introducing Lisa Casalino,” recorded at New York City’s legendary Nola Studios, where Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Lena Horne and James Brown recorded.

“It’s a long-time dream come true,” says Casalino of her first complete album, which includes three original tracks that she co-wrote with jazz musician Nate Najar, as well as nine jazz/standards covers. “People can expect to hear emotional and pure songs that come from an honest place, authentic sounds that capture the essence of what jazz and standards should sound like.”

Listening to Casalino croon classics like “Easy Street,” “’S Wonderful” and “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” there’s no denying she belongs in front of a microphone. And with that distinguished voice and determined spirit, the sky’s the limit for this rising star who can’t wait to see where destiny takes her.

Casalino’s album is available on iTunes and through her website, www.LisaCasalino.com, where you can find a schedule of her upcoming performances.

All Around Artist – Celebrating Living Legend Bernie Taupin

Bernie Taupin

Bernie Taupin

There’s no denying Bernie Taupin’s legacy as one of the greatest songsmiths of all time. After all, he’s penned some of the most memorable pop-rock tunes in history, including Heart’s “These Dreams,” Starship’s “We Built This City” and Willie Nelson’s “Mendocino County Line.”

“To me [he’s] the greatest lyric writer that ever lived on the face of the planet,” once declared Axl Rose, the lead vocalist of the hard rock band Guns N’ Roses.

But the 61-year-old Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee is best known for his longtime musical partnership with the one and only Sir Elton John. Together they’ve composed more than 30 albums and crafted timeless classics like “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” “Candle in the Wind” and “Sad Songs (Say So Much)” to name just a few.

“Without Bernie, basically, there wouldn’t have been an Elton John,” once stated Elton John, who was first paired up with Taupin by a record executive at England’s Liberty Records more than 40 years ago. “I mean, without that stroke of good fortune and kismet as it were, Elton John probably wouldn’t have happened. I’m just a purveyor of Bernie’s feelings, Bernie’s thoughts.”

Taupin’s extraordinary way with words dates back to his early childhood in Lincolnshire, England, where he developed an enormous interest in literature and narrative poetry. His parents cultivated that fascination by reading him great epic poems.

“Family and creativity are the driving forces in my life… Books, art, music, nature, the world around us and the experience of having had parental guidance that encouraged an appetite for stepping outside the box,” proclaims Taupin, who never had much of an interest in traditional schooling but always demonstrated a flair for writing. “Having a strong passionate family to lean on and draw inspiration from is like being in the best gang in town.”

Despite his continued collaborative partnership with artists Elton John and his hosting duties on the “American Roots Radio” program on Sirius XM Radio, Taupin’s astounding artistry extends well beyond music. When he isn’t composing inspired lyrics or paying homage to his heroes, Taupin demonstrates his brushstrokes of genius by creating visual works of art.

Bamboo

Bamboo

“Canvas to me is simply the visual extension of what I have spent my life creating through words,” reveals Taupin, who paints at his in-home studio in Santa Barbara County, California. “I have no formula except that which comes from what I dream, feel and see. To me colors are like words…they express emotions. Likewise, texture and mediums display an abundance of moods. The imagination, in my estimation, is the most powerful tool the artist possesses, enabling us to conjure up beautiful distractions for the ears and eyes.”

Recently Taupin partnered with the Limelight Agency, which specializes in representing celebrity artists, to exhibit his multimedia paintings in art spaces across the globe. He’s not only wowing the world with his captivating canvases; Taupin’s seeing an enormous increase in requests for in-gallery appearances. He’ll even visit Tampa Bay in the coming weeks for a special exhibit of his works. (See sidebar.)

“Any form of appreciation for one’s work is gratifying,” admits Taupin, who says while projects come and go, painting is a constant in his life. “But for my own reasons, I would rather the observer [of my work] discard with titles and draw upon their own imagination to read into them what they will…good, bad or indifferent. It will cause stimulation and that’s reward enough.”

So whether he’s painting a masterpiece that incites personal reflection or composing a classic tune that touches the hearts of millions, it seems there’s no limit to Taupin’s imagination or creativity.

Design, Rhythm & Xol – Meet Eduardo Xol, A Real-Life Renaissance Man

Eduardo Xol

Eduardo Xol

For more than five years, Eduardo Xol has been living life to the extreme. He’s served as a designer and landscape artist on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” ABC’s popular reality series centered on helping rebuild the homes of families dealing with serious hardships. It’s an experience that has forever changed his life.

Ediardo Xol - Design“My philosophy of designing for all the senses was born out of my experiences during the show’s first year,” declares the 45-year-old Xol, who vividly remembers designing an outdoor space that initial season for the family of a man who lost his ability to see after being shot in the head during an armed robbery. “Normally, one wouldn’t think of landscape design for someone who is blind. But by using different sounds from water features and wind chimes, as well as plants with distinct smells and flooring with textures, I was able to tap into his other senses to ensure he’d know exactly where he was outside—without having to see.”

Even though Xol won’t be returning this season to the television show that made him a star, he plans to maximize his celebrity status to make a positive difference in the world. He’s already designing a park and garden area at his former middle school, Macy Intermediate, in East Los Angeles.

“The plan is to create a new green area to facilitate and outdoor/lifestyle learning space for the students,” announces Xol, who credits his grandmother and father for fueling his passion for landscape design. “It’s going to be amazing!”

The first generation Mexican-American, who grew up in a predominantly Asian and Latino community, says his overall design aesthetic is rooted deeply in his rich multicultural upbringing.

“I combine the clean lines and composition of my Asian influence, while incorporating strong ethnic themes and elements influenced by my family.” asserts Xol, who has created awe-inspiring outdoor spaces for high-profile clients like Selma Blair. “When designing for others, I always design for the senses!”

But Xol isn’t just a designer and lifestyle expert; he’s a modern day Renaissance man. Before launching his design empire, Xol was a critically acclaimed musician.

“Before I could speak, I was ready to play piano,” utters Xol, an accomplished percussionist and keyboardist selected to perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of 10. “Music is a universal language I was blessed to have been born understanding.”

It’s that enormous musical talent that led to a recording contract with BMG and Xol’s career-advancing move to Mexico City, where he’d release his award-nominated, Spanish-language debut album and later co-star in three telenovelas. The end result: Xol was selected as one of People en Español’s 50 Most Beautiful People and named as one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the U.S. by Hispanic magazine.

“I feel extremely humbled by the accolades,” asserts Xol. “They remind me to keep doing my best as I realize I am representing my Hispanic community and serving as a role model for the next generation.”

Eduardo Xol - EquilibrioAlong with releasing a collection of musical compositions entitled, “equilibrio,” Xol’s developing a musical reality show with one of his own childhood idols, iconic Spanish-American actress, singer and flamenco guitarist, Charo.

“Growing up Hispanic in this country, I could see my reflection in few entertainers… Charo was one of them,” recounts Xol. “It’s amazing to get to know her as she talks about her own experiences in the business. ‘Cuchi-Cuchi’ is a seasoned entrepreneur.”

Like Charo, Xol has experienced remarkable success in several fields, which he credits to his commitment to living life as an artist.

“Just as in music, I’ve recomposed the soundtrack to my life,” states the fiercely determined Xol. “In the process, I have recreated my career path. But no matter what I’m doing, the impulse is always coming from the same creative place. I’ve been blesses with so many experiences most people dream about!”

So whether Xol’s designing an outdoor space, composing a piece of music or giving back to the community, rest assured this Renaissance man is living life to the extreme as a multimedia force in the growing multicultural market.

Garden Guru – The Dirt on Renowned Landscaper Jon Carloftis

Jon Carloftis

Jon Carloftis

He may have All-American good looks, but Jon Carloftis is best known for his gifted hands. The award-winning garden designer has been beautifying the world with his green thumb for more than 20 years. It’s a rewarding love affair with nature that dates back to his childhood in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.

“When you’re raised in the Daniel Boone National Forest without TV or neighbors, you learn to explore and really see what’s out there. There was beauty everywhere you turned,” professes the 46-year-old Carloftis who recently released his third book, Beautiful Gardens of Kentucky. “If you’ve ever been to the Bluegrass State, you’ll be surprised at the natural beauty of the landscape. It’s low-key, but gorgeous. Even the simplest composition of native plants becomes a work of art.”

Carloftis’ own masterpieces have garnered major attention throughout the years. He’s appeared on HGTV, “Martha Stewart Living” and “Good Morning America,” as well as in magazines like Garden Design, House Beautiful and Better Homes and Gardens. “It makes you feel good when someone appreciates your work,” admits Carloftis, who divides his time between his country home in Pennsylvania and his beloved Kentucky. “Being featured in such a variety of publications shows a real diversity of interest and, hopefully, talent.”

It’s that natural talent, along with a tenacious spirit, that resulted in Carloftis becoming a leading authority in rooftop and small space gardening in New York City after graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1988—even though he’d never actually been on a roof.

“I had to make a living and gardening was my answer,” declares Carloftis, who loves being close to the earth. “I made cards that said, Jon Carloftis, Rooftop Gardener, and gave them to elevator and doormen to hand out to people living on the top floors. Within a couple of weeks, a couple called me and gave me a chance.”

Carloftis’ impressive design skills won the couple over in mere months. Not only did they make him responsible for their entire Park Avenue terrace, but they highly recommended him to friends, neighbors and colleagues.

“My career has been word of mouth for 22 years now,” affirms Carloftis, who has created remarkable rooftop gardens for celebrities like Julianne Moore, Edward Norton and Mike Myers. “The secret to success is working hard, being tenacious and learning from your mistakes. Anywhere, but especially in New York, you may be given a chance, but you’d better perform.”

Jon Carloftis - Rooftop GardenThat mindset seems to be serving Carloftis well, since everything’s coming up roses for him this year. His list of projects includes: a re-design of the Jim Beam Distillery; an array of lush landscapes at an 800-acre horse farm in Lexington; an all-native space at the Curtis Institute of Music’s LEED-certified building in Philadelphia; and a rooftop garden at the Google Building in Manhattan. So what’s his objective for each venture? To create a comfortable and natural place where people want to visit.

“The best gardens I’ve ever seen have been those where imagination runs wild—clever gardens that make you think,” proclaims Carloftis. “It’s just like people. They can be beautiful and perfect. But unless they have a personality, you will never remember them.

If that’s the case, then rest assured Carloftis’ gardens will continue to be good-looking, charming and completely unforgettable.

The Million Dollar Man – Meet Realtor to the Stars Chad Rogers

Celebrity - Chad Rogers - Panache Vue Magazine

Chad Rogers

It’s hard to imagine one of the country’s leading luxury real estate agents beginning his career selling mobile homes. But that’s exactly how Chad Rogers got his start. The Malibu native spent the summer before his senior year in college working at his father’s mobile home park in Apopka, Florida. It’s an experience that forever changed his life.

“One day a young couple came in to buy a singlewide trailer for $19,900,” recalls Rogers, who co-starred on “Million Dollar Listing,” Bravo’s hit reality series. “They applied for credit, but the bank denied them. I felt really bad! It was at that point that I decided I wanted to do something different.”

Before graduating from the University of Denver, Rogers connected with a family friend, a top realtor in Beverly Hills who just happened to be looking for a buyer’s agent.

“She told me I could make $150,000 in my first year,” exclaims Rogers, who recently turned 34. “That’s all I needed to hear!”

After earning his business degree, Rogers returned to Southern California to obtain his real estate license and begin a remarkable career selling dream homes and mansions to power-player clients including celebrities and pro athletes.

“My clients know that I will go above and beyond for them,” declares Rogers. “I have a strong work ethic and believe in seeing things through ‘til the end. It’s about the relationship, not just selling the house.

Celebrity - Chad Rogers - House Photo - Panache Vue Magazine”It’s that commitment to maintaining positive relationships with his superstar clients that resulted in his role on Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing.”

“I had been an agent in the Los Angeles area for eight years,” remembers Rogers. “I opted to participate as a way to share the do’s and don’ts of real estate. It was an incredible experience, one I will never forget.”

Even though Rogers decided to step away from the show that made him famous, the nationally recognized real estate authority is more popular than ever. Not only is he featured in publications like the Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal and In Touch Weekly, he also lectures at colleges and offers expert advice on Realtor.com.

“Now more than ever people need expert counsel, so they can invest wisely and negotiate effectively in this economy,” proclaims Rogers. “My TV involvement has connected me to the world and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be considered an authority. I’m gratefulto be on this incredible journey.”

But Rogers isn’t just enjoying increased recognition. Despite the economic downturn, Rogers posted the best sales results of his 13-year career in 2010. He reported $82 million in property sales last year and represented the buyer of a Beverly Hills home that sold for $23.5 million (pictured above)—the highest sale of the year in Los Angeles County per the Multiple Listing Service (MLS)

“I watched the MLS like a hawk and hoped another sale wouldn’t ace me out of that title,” admits Rogers. “When the final numbers were tallied, I was happier than I’ve ever been. I conquered something through hard work and it was such a rush. It was the biggest confirmation that hard work really does pay off.”

But Rogers believes there may be another factor contributing to his success, Starla—his adorable pet Chihuahua.

“I am convinced that Starla is my good luck charm,” professes Rogers. “Some clients even request that I bring her to meet them. I feel like anything’s possible with Starla by my side!”

So where does this shaggy-haired uberagent see himself in the next five years? Well, you’ll have to look at another tress-obsessed celebrity for a clue.

“Donald Trump is the business guru, and Chad Rogers will be the real estate guru,” exclaims Rogers. “Ever since I was 12 years old, Donald Trump has been a huge inspiration to me. Throughout the years I have watched his brand grow internationally. I think of myself as a junior Trump in the making and want to be known as the number one voice in real estate!”

Looking at what Rogers has accomplished in his relatively short career, there’s absolutely no doubt this Million Dollar Man is well on his way to achieving his dream of becoming an international real estate icon, maybe even a Billion Dollar Man!

Feel free to submit any real estate questions to Rogers via Twitter at @ChadRogersTV or by visiting his website www.chadrogers.tv.

Flipping the Script – Jeff Lewis Goes from House-Flipper to Design Guru

Jeff Lewis

Jeff Lewis

Since taking the national spotlight on Bravo’s Flipping Out less than five years ago, Jeff Lewis has swiftly become a household name. He’s arguably the country’s most famous house-flipper-turned design-mogul.

Along with seeing his hit docu-reality series achieve double-digit growth in its fourth season to reach an average of 1.2 million viewers, Lewis has watched his design firm flourish in a depressed real estate market.

“Business is good, I really can’t complain,” proclaims the 40-year-old Lewis, who has more than 20 years of real estate and interior design experience. “I’m seeing more people interested in hiring us and I’m able to be more selective when choosing clients.”

And they’re not just located in his home state of California. In the last few years, Lewis has taken on more projects across the country, including a high-profile assignment for House Beautiful coveted by every designer on the planet. He had the privilege of designing the magazine’s 2010 Kitchen of the Year. Hailed as the “ultimate dream kitchen,” Lewis’ creation—with its warm California Modern design and high-tech amenities—garnered rave reviews from designers and editors alike, including the editor in chief at House Beautiful.

“Jeff is really good at doing clean livable spaces that are not cold, hard or austere. There’s still a lot of warmth in the kitchen, especially in the materials” explained Newell Turner, House Beautiful’s editor-in-chief, to reporters at the kitchen’s unveiling ceremony in Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center last summer.” [Jeff] thinks the way a homeowner would think, about what works and what wouldn’t work in reality and he makes it beautiful and practical—never superfluous.”

Despite the high praise, Lewis isn’t resting on his laurels. He’s expanding his booming renovation and design business while embracing new opportunities to take his empire to new heights.

“I’m looking for longevity. Whether that longevity is three years or 20, I would rather see that last,” declares the notoriously obsessive compulsive Lewis. “I want to continue to maintain my name and reputation, which I believe is synonymous with quality.”

That commitment to expanding his brand name without sacrificing excellence has recently resulted in two significant retail ventures: an exclusive line of products for QVC and a customized home design collection for online retailer Alluminare.

“Jeff Lewis is known for his clean, modern style and is notorious for his attention to detail,” recently announced Friday Shamblen, founder of Alluminare, in a company statement. “We are thrilled to bring his unique talent into our customers’ homes in a way that’s never been done before.”

But making Jeff Lewis a household name from Los Angeles to Long Island isn’t a one man mission. From his recently promoted chief operations officer Jenni Pulos to his live-in housekeeper Zoila Chavez, Lewis has surrounded himself with a fervently faithful support staff that gets him—everything from his obsessive-compulsive quirks and meticulousness to his design vision and dedication to quality.

“The fact is these people are like family,” explains Lewis. “We’ve been called crazy, and maybe we are, but we all get each other. The people who work for me understand my way of thinking.”

But in the end, there’s only one person at Jeff Lewis Design more dedicated than his beloved team.

“Nobody cares about my business as much as I do,” says Lewis. “I’m working seven days a week. I’m thinking at 8 o’clock at night of ways to grow my business. This is what drives me.” So what’s next for Jeff Lewis? Even though he’s keeping mum about a fifth season of Flipping Out and rumors that he’ll soon star in a new daytime talk show, Lewis is certainly devoted to creating a lasting legacy in the real estate and design worlds.

No matter where the road takes him, rest assured it will definitely be—to quote the greeting his employees utter when answering his business line—”it’s a great day at Jeff Lewis’ office!”

His Heart Has Touched So Many Hearts!

Salvatore Principe

Salvatore Principe

Principe’s career as an artist wasn’t born from this lofty proclamation. It would take ten years as a working artist and a life-shattering tragedy before Salvatore found and accepted his soul’s desire, “to paint the world with love.” Yet, Principe has always been a passionate zealot with an impossibly idealistic view of how the world should be.

Born in New York City in 1959, Salvatore Principe was raised in midtown Manhattan in a larger-than-life Italian family. “I left high school early, bored and frustrated and feeling that I let my parents down,” says Principe in an unpublished memoir of his career. “But school just couldn’t contain me. Depending on the subject matter, I either had too many questions or no interest at all. My mother was disappointed. My father was furious.

Feeling like a failure, but following instinct, Salvatore traded school for a new playground in the streets of New York. Soon, he landed a job at Studio 54 – smack in the middle of its heyday. The illustrious discotheque was the gold standard of discos, and the job would ultimately give Principe some unexpected work experience that would turn out to be invaluable later in life. With an undeniable eye for aesthetics and tireless perseverance, Salvatore eventually earned a job assisting the lighting technician, all the while surrounded by some of the most famous partiers of the time, including Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, Mick & Bianca Jagger, Calvin Klein, Halston, Valentino Garavani, Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor and anyone else with serious clout and a desire to see and be seen.

With no training and no real tools, Salvatore Principe began creating art from objects mostly found in New York City roadside trash heaps. His first pieces were sculptures – dark abstracts, reminiscent of the life he was leaving behind but made from materials light enough to allow him to easily transport the work on foot.

Witnessing his son’s renewed spirit, Salvatore’sfather Adam began to recognize some of his own fortitude in the budding artist.“He went out and bought me every paint color imaginable, a handful of brushes and a stack of wrapped canvases,” recalls Salvatore fondly. “It was his way of telling me that he believed in me”.

With his father’s unspoken approval, Salvatore’s passion grew unbridled. He continued scouring the streets for raw material. He pulled inspiration from New York’s contradicting landscape of cosmopolitan beauty and violent brutality and its collision of celebrity, culture and infamy. His heroes became Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. He created and sold hundreds of art pieces, and he unabashedly pedaled his wares. Then one day, his resolve landed him a tremendous break. Manhattan’s most prominent department store, Bergdorf Goodman, would give Principe carte blanche to exhibit his work in its famous window displays for a full three weeks. Such luck quickly led to other exhibits for Tiffany Jewelers, Saks Fifth Avenue and Casabella’s 20,000 square foot furniture showroom. Soon SoHo galleries were inviting him to exhibit, and everything seemed to be going right for the now 29 year old. Then, in an instant, Salvatore’s world was turned upside down.

His mother Anita, who was also his best friend and biggest champion, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and given only a few years to live. After three long and painful years of chemotherapy, hair loss, and dramatic weight fluctuations, Anita Principe finally succumbed to the cancer, and her family buried their beloved at the agonizingly young age of 50.

It was 1991. George H. W. Bush was President, the country was suffering a recession, and Salvatore Principe had a broken heart. “I couldn’t bear to be in the city anymore. Her absence was palpable. And everything reminded me of her,” says Principe. So he headed to South Florida to visit his also broken-hearted aunt Patti, Anita’s sister.

The visit tempted Principe to trade New York’s grim winters and haunted memories for the Florida sunshine, a surrogate mother figure, and prayers to heal his pain. Salvatore returned to New York, packed up his belongings and moved to Boca Raton, Florida. His new best friend was an acute and lingering heartache, and in his desperation to escape the anguish, the tortured artist did the only thing he could do, he created. At first, it was more of the same — abstracts and three-dimensional collage. And then, as his sorrow found its expression, something else happened. He became inspired again. This time his inner longing was more profound, and Salvatore Principe’s hope to fill the world with love was born. How would he manage to execute such a noble plan? One heart at a time.

At first, he experimented with muted earthtone hearts painted freehand onto 11”x14” canvas wrapped frames. He then began playing with the backgrounds, icing each canvas with his own plaster blend, and washing it with soft watery hues. The shapes also transformed from thin figures confined in black outlines to more voluptuous hearts in a sensual rainbow of colors. But it wasn’t enough to just paint the symbol of love. Principe took to embellishing the hearts with loving sentiments as well. And so it was that the Signature Hearts collection was born.

Before long, gallery owners to high end gift shop managers, to private collectors were snatching up Salvatore’s newest creation by the dozens. It seemed that by following his heart, and in essence sharing it with the world, Salvatore would become a sensation. After years of success with his Signature Hearts and other love-inspired works, Principe finally realized a lifelong dream.

Salvatore Principe - Short and Sweet CollectionBy now, Principe had painted thousands of hearts in every size and color – collaged hearts, floating hearts, gilded hearts and enigmatic hearts camouflaged in backgrounds of his abstracts. His exclusive art collection, fine wines and other signature pieces can be viewed by appointment only at a gallery studio in Boca Raton, FL. Principe also has been working on a fine china line, custom made furniture, candles, perfume, a clothing line with a particularly beautiful dress worn by Prince Harry’s girlfriend and Neiman Marcus will be introducing his exclusive scarf event in February 2011!

Some critics speculate that this most recent phase of artwork reflects the artist coming home to his roots. But those who have witnessed the full spectrum of his career know better. Salvatore Principe never left his roots. He took them with him, nurtured them and grew them into something that he hopes will make the world better. After all, for this romantic, idealist, dreamer – home is where the heart is.
