It’s Never Too Late

Just recently I had an adult patient come up to me after her treatment and gave me a big Hug. She said she was so happy that she had undergone her Orthodontic treatment, and said it was life changing.

This kind of took me by surprise a bit and asked her how it was life changing. She just smiled and began to tell me about how awkward she had always been when around new people. She related that she had been out to a party and met and very nice man who she found fascinating. They started a conversation. The entire time she would only speak with her hand partially covering her mouth as to not show in her mind her less than attractive smile. But unfortunately she found she slipped a bit and exposed her smile which made her very self conscience. As the party wound down they exchanged numbers and she was told he would soon be in contact, but it never happened.

At that point in her story I could see a look of sorrow fall upon her face and her new found smile disappeared temporarily. She stated that she felt it was her smile and her lack of self confidence of it was holding her back. That’s when she started her quest for a better smile. After talking to me and my staff she decided she was ready for the transformation and after a short 18 months of treatment she was ready for the world. As it happens she had attended another party at which the man whom she met before was present. She approached him with her newly acquired smile and they hit if off immediately, and they are still together. I found this so gratifying that her improved smile gave her the confidence that she seemed to lack earlier and that was what “changed her life”. The moral to this story is simple. Take the bull by the horns and don’t wait but change your life today. If we can be part of your transformation please call for a complimentary exam and kick start your life.

Love Is In the Air

“Love is in the air” A sentiment that is very familiar. Being the month of February the world seems to rotate around the theme of Love. Whether it is love of a sweetheart, wife, husband, children, extended family or friends, this month has a very strong take to it. Wouldn’t it be great if we all could have this feeling all year long not just the month of February. Being able to constantly have this feeling of joy to our fellow man is a most amazing thought. Believe it or not we can, it only takes “us” to change it. That’s right going out of our way to help others in need. Putting someone ahead of ourselves in the things we do or think. How much do you think this “idea” could change our world. My bet would be it would be a much better place. I believe it’s time we all take these matters into our own hands and not wait for others to go first. Spread the love not only on Valentine’s Day or even the entire month of February but always.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day and if I can help you reach the best smile you can have, please call for a complementary evaluation.

As the New Year Approaches the craziness of the hectic holidays seems to always raise havoc on us

Starting with Thanksgiving brings a season of reflection and inner warmth that hopefully changes us for the better. That is what makes us unique in the animal kingdom. Let us all take some time this Holiday season and pay it forward. Going out of our way to be friendly and courteous and being cognitive of others around us and what may be going on in their lives. Maintaining our own health is so very important and needs to be high on everyone’s list. From losing those few extra pounds or obtaining that great healthy smile that we have always wanted. We are here to help you in your quest for self improvement. Please call us if we can help you get to your goals for the New Year.

It’s Summertime

“It’s summertime when the living is easy” many of us remember that old classic and the memories of past summertime adventures. Getting into this summertime season I had a very interesting question poised to me at a recent new patient consult. I was asked by a young Patients mother that “Wasn’t it true that if the patient is older when we treat them the teeth will stay better in their new position”. According to this Mother this is what had been told to her by friends.

Unfortunately this is another “old wives tale”. So to set the record straight, Age has no direct relationship to long term stability of an Orthodontic end result. What I mean by direct relationship is that the position of the teeth will maintain themselves as long as they are retained, no matter how old one is. I guess one could argue that a young person may not wear their retainers as well as an older individual and hence see more tooth movement. But it boils down to the individual and their wiliness to follow their Orthodontists recommendations. In all the years that I have been in practice I have seen patients that I have treated at the age of 12 and with good retainer wear see perfect stability at the age of 40. In the converse I have seen patients treated at the age of 40 and by 45 their teeth are moving all over the place due to poor retainer wear.

One thing that summer affords us is that getting your braces on now will allow for adjustment to them prior to the beginning of School, and one less thing to be concerned about starting a new school year.

Please call us today for a complimentary consult and “Let’s get something straight”.

Changing Lives… One Smile at a Time

Dr. Paul Duryea

Dr. Paul Duryea

Dr. Paul R. Duryea is not your typical Orthodontist, there is so much more to this gracious man that many don’t know. His smile lights up every room he walks into and just exudes friendliness and happiness, he’s someone you just want to get to know better!

His background is interesting and his life’s accomplishments even more so. Dr. Duryea had gone thru four years of Dental School at the University of Detroit at which he graduated as Valedictorian and with Summa Cum Laude distinction. He started his private practice in 1981 and was the 1st full time Orthodontist in Palm Harbor! He treats not only adolescent patients, but also has a very large adult practice.

The scope of his practice is from minor correction with appliances to the correction of severe dental and skeletal problems with the need for jaw surgery. He is a Preferred Provider of Invisalign and has been for 10 years.

Dr. Duryea got involved in Orthodontics in a very odd way. He had completed his Dental School clinical requirements by the end of his junior year.

“Because of that fact I was asked to find “something to do” for my senior year, I had decided I wanted to become an Oral surgeon initially, but was attracted to the Orthodontic department to finish up my senior year before applying to a surgery program. I became very interested in Orthodontics because of treating a wide range of patients and was very interested in Surgical Orthodontics. By the time I completed my fourth year of Dental school, I had completed the clinical requirements of the masters Program in Orthodontics. I never applied to the Orthodontic Program formally and was asked into the program by the Chairman of the Department. As an enticement, I was offered to run the Chairman’s private practice as a first year graduate student. I completed the program with not only a certificate in Orthodontics, but also a Master’s Degree in Orthodontics”.

Dr. Duryea’s primary focus is to offer the highest standard of Orthodontic treatment in a casual and intimate setting. His practice is different from many others in that he has a small but well trained staff of four, 2 as administrative assistants and 2 that are certified Orthodontic Assistants who take personal time with every patient.

There are no satellite offices, and he is in the same office all of their normal business hours. He sees to all emergencies himself, unless he is out of town golfing or lecturing. One of his goals is to stay on time. Since his patients arrange their day around their Orthodontic appointment, Dr. Duryea is respectful of all of his patient’s time and maintains their appointment on time!

His patients come from a very large geographic area, from Pinellas to Pasco. His associations and affiliations are too many to mention. Dr. Duryea continues to offer state of the art in Orthodontic treatments and anticipates bringing in an associate in the near future.

One of his most rewarding and memorable work related experiences involved a 17 year old young lady with not only a severe malocclusion (bad bite), but a severe skeletal problem that was a major contributing factor to her bite. During their initial consultation, Dr. Duryea knew her problem was very severe. She did not look at him and said nothing. Sadly, she was totally lacking self-confidence. But, after two years of Orthodontic treatment and corrective surgery was completed, her Mom took him aside and gave him a big hug filled with love and gratitude! Her daughter finally looked like the rest of the family. “The most amazing part was during her retention phase of treatment. She would come in all smiles and was amazed how her social life had improved. Her self-confidence soared! That’s what makes what I do so rewarding. To be able to profoundly change a person’s life by restoring their smile and facial appearance is unbelievable and gratifying”, states Dr. Duryea.

Dr. Duryea’s family life is another great accomplishment. Married to Nan, his best friend for 37 years, they have raised 2 great kids, Becky and Scott. Paul and Nan’s newest treasure is grandson Harrison.

Paul’s hobbies include Travel, Cooking, Golf, and of course Halloween! He is our very own, Walt Disney! For the past 19 years, he personally builds a display outside of his house call the “Mansion of the Macabre”. It takes a month to set up and take down and is open for only 2 nights a year. He does this as a fund raiser for Susan G. Komen, For the Cure and The Suncoast Hospice. There is no admission fee; they only accept donations to one of these charities every year. He’s been told by more than one visitor, it’s the “Disney of Palm Harbor” It truly is his labor of love!

Dr. Paul Duryea is so many things to so many of us. Caring and compassionate, loving, and always striving to be better and do what is best for others. He is a role model to all and someone we can all learn from. He changes lives.

Spring Sets a New Tone for the Rest of the Year

The warmth of the spring time sun brings a new awakening to the sleepy world of winter. “Yes Virginia” it was a warmer than anticipated winter but spring sets a new tone for the rest of the year. Have you given thought to the one person who is usually last on the list for esthetic improvements? Well you need to take the bull by the horns and set yourself obtainable goals that you can follow and achieve. It may be weight loss, it may be exercise it may even be a new “hair style” or even a new smile. There have been many studies that have shown people with a beautiful smile are more trusted, seem to be friendlier, thought to be more intelligent and by far happier than their “poor smile” counterpart.

Orthodontics is the oldest Dental specialty and has changed drastically since its inception. Now there are Lingual braces (behind the teeth) Ceramic braces (tooth colored) Gold braces (plated in a 24K gold alloy) and even clear non bracket aligners. Like everything else in life they all have their own nuances and limitations. Orthodontics is continually striving to deliver the best smile with a minimum of visual impediment during treatment. So remember if you have been thinking of getting that “fantastic smile” take that first step and make an appointment for a no charge Orthodontic exam. It could be the best decision for the person that is always taken care of last. It can change your life forever!
