PV Pads – An Urban Core Charmer Nestled Among the Oaks

Created to compliment an historic Tampa neighborhood, this newer Storybook home, as well as its interior details, was conceived by Fountainhead Design. Stained glass windows, a stone wall fountain, natural rock and wood trimmings, copper roofing, and a bell tower all contribute to the romance of the Storybook style.

The tower foyer with its stained glass windows includes a 2nd story balcony extending above a pair of graceful wooden scrolls that were salvaged from an antique piano.

Meet Tampa Bay’s Most Eligible Bachelor Nick Peterson

From Baseball to the Bachelor Pad

It should come as no surprise that Nick Peterson’s star has been on the rise since his appearance last summer on The Bachelorette. After all, the Odessa, Florida native has all-American good looks and charming personality. And even though they didn’t help him win Ashley Hebert’s heart, they did capture America’s attention.

“It’s opened a lot of doors,” admits Peterson, who is appearing on ABC’s The Bachelor Pad this summer for a second chance at love and the prospect of winning $250,000. “The national recognition has helped me build my name up and get my name out.”

But gaining popularity isn’t something new for Peterson. The 27-year-old former professional baseball player actually started making a name for himself on the diamond while growing up in Florida.

“I was consistently one of the better players on the field, and so I stuck with it,” recalls Peterson, who only discovered his natural talent for baseball after a horrendous attempt at playing soccer. “My dad was always out there practicing with me, pushing me.”

Peterson went on to become a superstar pitcher at Jesuit High School, Tampa’s all-male Catholic school with a rich history of turning out all-star athletes.

“In high school I was only a pitcher; it’s what I was best at. I wasn’t going to be hitting, I can tell you that,” jokes Peterson. “I enjoyed being in control of the game, having the ball, being the guy in charge.”

Nick Peterson

Nick Peterson

Peterson’s stellar skills on the mound landed him a scholarship to Appalachian State University in North Carolina, where he played ball for two years before transferring to the University of Tampa. In 2006, Peterson was drafted by the New York Yankees.

“Hearing your name come up on the draft, it brings tears to your eyes,” admits Peterson, who was called up in the 12th round as the 374th overall pick. “It’s every boys dream; and you work so hard for it your whole life.”

Peterson spent two years in the minor leagues playing with the Yankees’ Staten Island and Charleston, South Carolina farm teams. He then went on to become an independent athlete with teams in Alberta, Canada and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“Independent ball is like what arena football is to the NFL,” explains Peterson. “You’re paid, but there’s no moving up throughout the organization. You’re hoping a Major League Baseball team will pick you out and put you in their organization.”

But after two years chasing his Major League dreams, Peterson decided it was time to move on to the next chapter of his life.

“I didn’t want to be 35 and still playing independent baseball,” says Peterson, who returned to the University of Tampa to complete his studies and get his bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship. “I gave it my best shot; and it felt like a mature decision to move on. Obviously I didn’t make it all the way to the top, but it was the best four years of my life.”

Right around the same time he graduated from college in the summer of 2010, Peterson went on to become a certified personal trainer. And later that year he launched Peety’s Personal Training, located at Body Shapers Private Studio in Tampa.

“I always told myself that if I didn’t make it to the big leagues, I would really go at it hard,” states Peterson, whose former body-builder father introduced him to working out at an early age. “I didn’t really think I’d be doing it for a living. I thought I’d be doing it for fun, for myself. But I love my job!”

So what can current and future clients expect from Peterson?

“I sing,” kids Peterson, who tends to break out into song while whipping his clients into shape. “It’s a high intensity workout, complete with circuit training. I’ve kind of carried on my father’s body building techniques, and I use a lot of them in my training. It’s all one-on-one; I build a personal relationship with each client.”

Nick Peterson - Panache Vue' Magazine

Nick Peterson

And Peterson’s client list continues to grow. A year after his Bachelorette days, he’s still seeing a spike in business, as well as a few comical calls from admirers.

“I have some clients who are still with me because they saw me on the show,” says Peterson. “But I also get a lot of teenage girls who call to set up an appointment only to show up, giggle, and say hello and leave.”

Meanwhile, the still-single Peterson hasn’t given up on love. He’s still searching for an outgoing Christian woman with a similar passion for health and fitness. And once he finds her, he has two ideas for the perfect first date.

“I am a country music fan, so I love heading to the amphitheater, laying out a blanket and listening to some great live music,” proclaims Peterson. “Line dancing is another favorite; so either of those would be great dates.”

But until Mrs. Right comes along, Peterson plans to concentrate on expanding his business through online personal training while never taking his good fortune for granted.

“God has blessed me in so many ways,” affirms Peterson. “I’ve been really blessed with my baseball career, a wonderful family that supports me the whole way through, my own business and The Bachelorette.”

With that appreciation for life’s blessings, strong work ethic and charming personality, you can rest assured Peterson won’t be a Bachelor for long.

Block Party

Revel in This Season’s Tri-Color Trend!

The dog days of summer are upon us, with the sultriest days of the season ahead. And if you’re looking to add some extra sizzle to your looks to rival the high heat outdoors, this is the perfect time to incorporate this season’s hot color-blocking trend into your wardrobe.

A La Moda - Block Party

Sure, it may not be a new concept in the fashion world, but the color-blocking trend—the combining of three or more colors that both complement and support each other—is back with such a bang this season that you can’t overlook it.

This summer designers like Donna Karan, Phillip Lim and Carolina Herrera have joined the (block) party. From crafting vibrant-colored garments that can be perfectly mixed and matched together to producing individual pieces and accessories that create the color-block effect for you, they’ve embraced the tri-color trend in a big way this season.

And if you’re looking for eye-catching examples of the color-block effect, just open up the latest issue of Us Weekly and OK! Magazine. This summer, style-savvy celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry and Jessica Alba have been snapped taking fashion-forward risks and experimenting with fun color combinations like hot pink, emerald green and tangerine.

So if you’re ready to block out in sizzling style this summer, here are some ways to help you master the tri-color trend:

A La Moda - Block PartyAccessory to Style
Not one to “go bold or go home” when it comes to taking fashion risks? Well, you can still embrace the color-block trend without committing to a full outfit of three haute hues. From combining a few colors to your nail palette to wearing three colorful bangles or a color-blocked pair of shoes, you can still take small steps to stand out in style. And here’s an easy way to incorporate the trend into your makeup: Stila’s user-friendly eye shadow trio provides a base color, one for the crease and one that you can use as an eyeliner.

Cheat the System
If you’re hoping to integrate the color-block trend into your wardrobe without worrying about which hues to pair together, you’re in luck! Designers like Marc Jacobs and Alberta Ferretti have made it easy for you to look like a real fashionsta by creating individual pieces, like color-blocked dresses, that do all the work for you. Simply pick one that flatters your skin tone and personal style.

It’s All Complementary!
To create a harmonious look when color-blocking with separates, mix different hues of the same color – think turquoise, sky blue and navy or pale pink, bright pink and fuchsia. And, if you’re going with bolder colors, make sure to keep warmer tones like orange and red together. And make sure to go for a neutral-toned shoe and accessories to keep it simple.

Opposites Attract
If you’re ready to take your style up a notch, why not start mixing different shades together? Combinations like cobalt blue, yellow and orange or chocolate brown, pink and peach don’t just look great together, but they can help brighten a room. Just remember that hues opposite each other on the color wheel are the ones that usually complement each other best.

No matter how you choose to incorporate this summer’s scorching triple-tint trend into your wardrobe, don’t be afraid to mix up your wardrobe with blocks of color and have fun with it.

Commitment to Fitness

John Kent

John Kent

Admit it, sometimes working out can be a bore. For some women it’s one more thing on the daily to-do list that’s as thrilling as doing the dishes. But thanks to the creative mind of John Kent, the North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women is here putting an exciting new spin on fitness training. His motto is a commitment to fitness, fun and friendship. And if you are ready for an exciting change to the average workout routine, then this is the program for you. Boot camps aren’t just for soldiers anymore.

John Kent, owner and fitness coach, has been a certified personal trainer for 10 years and was a stage performer before that. He started the boot camp in October 2007, combining his experience as a personal trainer and stage performer to transform the rudimentary workout into a fun fitness experience that takes the drudgery out of exercise and makes working out an adventure to look forward to.

The boot camp concept came from California, and it provides two key elements that personal training at a traditional gym cannot do. One element is the boot camp makes time fly and it puts the adventure into a workout. When you are mentally engaged in an energizing activity, there is no chance for boredom to set in. Secondly, it is also affordable. Five days of boot camp training costs the same as one session with a personal trainer and the results are amazing. John’s philosophy is that exercise shouldn’t be what one lives for, but what helps one to live better.

Behind all of the fun, there is a scientific theory to this fitness program. This is life changing, science-based fitness and nutrition coaching exclusively for women. The training is different every day. Time in boot camp moves so fast then BAM! it’s over before you know it. Expert fitness instruction is provided so clients can be assured they are doing purposeful workouts, not just random exercises. Every day is an adventure and every day is different. Since the body is efficient and designed to become conditioned to routine, John’s training activities change every five to seven minutes during each session so the body won’t have a chance to become complacent. John uses a combination of resistance training and interval training to “blast fat off the body.” Training is offered three times a day, 5:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 7:00 p.m., to fit into everyone’s schedule. The boot camp meets outside in the open air so clients workout in a natural setting instead of inside a gym. During the summer months, the 9:00 a.m. boot camp meets indoors to avoid the intense Florida heat.

John’s program also includes habit-based nutrition coaching to teach clients how to develop habits and rituals to aid in weight loss and maintain long term success. He is committed to a program with proven results. He realizes there are many diet and exercise programs on the market that claim “quick fixes and magic bullets.” But, there isn’t a fix-all pill, fad diet or pixie dust anyone can use to transform themselves. John accentuates the positive and likes to focus on what clients can do, not on what they can’t do. The combination of John’s science-based exercise program and habit-based nutrition coaching is his recipe for long term success. “This way the weight loss effort is not like the movie Groundhog Day where you’re always starting over with the next new diet, new exercise program, new pills or gadgets.”

This boot camp positively impacts the women who commit to the program, but there is one instance that touched John and remains in his thoughts. One day he noticed one of his clients off to the side, crying. He approached her with concern and asked if she was alright. She told him that she felt silly, but that she was crying tears of joy because she’d finally found a program she could stick with. John realized at that moment what a huge impact he could have on the ladies in the boot camp and in the community. John is able to inspire his clients and keep them enthusiastic, which motivates them and keeps them moving in a healthy direction. John, in turn, owes his success to God and is motivated and inspired by his wife, a/k/a “Super Assistant Extraordinaire.” He says her support allows him to be a better trainer and coach while she keeps everything running smoothly in the office and their home with their four young children.

The home base for the North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women is north Pinellas county and is easily accessible to clients in Pinellas, Pasco and east Hillsborough counties. For more information go to www.BootCampRocks.com or call 727-420-8139.

Just in For Summer: A Wealth of Health

As daylight hours lengthen and the kids are being packed up for day camp instead of school, it can only mean one thing: summertime! Warmer weather means not just shedding sweaters from our wardrobe, but the chance to shed a few unhealthy habits too. I’ve got a few summer-inspired tips for keeping your body healthy.

Fruit

Follow Your Mother (Nature’s) Advice
Mama Nature’s natural tendency come summer is to pull all the animals out of hibernation – and that includes you. As sunbathing becomes part of your daily routine, you’ll notice a natural aversion to dense and heavy foods, like stews, pot roasts, and casseroles. Trade in those winter-reminders with lots of the easily accessible fruits and veggies. Those bright berries and lush greens expedite our bodies ability to detoxify, naturally making us feel cool in the heat.

Curious as to what summer fruits and vegetables you’ll find to fill your plate? Apricots, avocados, basil, beets, blueberries, mango, peaches, plums, squash and tomatoes are just a few natural treats that will be plentiful. Imagine a simple lunch each day of fresh basil leaves and heirloom tomatoes drizzled in olive oil. Perfection. Add a sprinkle of goat cheese for a more fanciful fare.

Summer Additions
Water, water, water: staying hydrated come summertime is vital to your health and wellbeing. Remember, your body is a graceful, gorgeous temple…that also houses more water than anything else. Replenishing yourself frequently will help keep your energy high, your spirits higher, and even allow you to sleep better at night.

GMO-Free: look for foods that are not genetically modified organisms. A GMO has genetic material from unrelated organisms – like a fish gene in a tomato (um, weird). In theory, GMO’s breed hardier plants by helping them resist drought and pests. But what GMO’s do to humans over a long period of time is not known. Wait until you know the facts before you buy into the fads.

Avoid These for a Healthy Summer
Faux wheat: yes, pure wheat and whole grains can be good for you (if you’re not gluten intolerant). But not everything labeled as “wheat” is truly made from wheat. In fact, wheat bread is generally made from white flour, and thus the same as eating Wonderbread. Anything can be labeled as wheat if the flour used comes from the wheat plant. Check your label for the ingredients list and if it contains the words “wheat flour” or anything “enriched” or “blanched” pass over it. Instead go for a 100% whole -grain like Ezekiel or Sunflower bread, and look for the terms “100% pure” and “organic whole grains.”

Fat Free: no, really. Anything fat free is to be avoided, unless it’s naturally made so. If fat is removed, so is flavor…which means food manufacturers added artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, or sugar to make it taste decent. The exception here is natural fats, or “good fats” as they’re often called. Nosh on avocados or nuts guilt free.

Most Importantly, Have Fun
Summer is a time for playing outside and embracing your inner child. Enjoy what the sunshine has to offer (with sunscreen of course!) and occasionally let yourself enjoy a cup of frozen yogurt (I recommend Pink Berry) or a dollop of Greek yogurt – those are good fats too, when used sparingly.

Environs – Your Window to the World

Cheryl Perotti

Cheryl Perotti

Drape it, shutter it, blind it, shade it, some combination of these options or just enjoy the view? That is the question when contemplating a window treatment. Don’t you just love the expression “window treatment”… as if the window has been through triage and needs help!

As you may suspect, that’s not always true. If you have a beautiful view, sometimes the last thing you want to do is take attention away from what lies beyond. And, if privacy is not a requisite, that is exactly what I recommend. Sun control can be achieved with solar films or exterior awnings and extremely plain or unsightly windows can be painted or trimmed out leaving you to enjoy the great outdoors. In addition to creating a sense of space and bringing nature indoors, you have the added benefit of all of that natural light.

When you need privacy at times but still love the view, the best approach is to employ a window dressing that completely clears the window when not in use and closely matches the wall color. This enables it to somewhat disappear from consideration, therefore not stopping your eye at the window.

If you have a room that needs warmth and interest of fabric, noise absorption or simply more eye catching detail, a drapery or curtain design can provide any and all of that. Plus cornices and lambrequins never go out of style and can be covered in fabric, wall paper, natural woods, bamboo, metals and just about any other material you might imagine.

Shutters are extremely functional since they can direct the view, provide light control, close for total privacy or open completely. If you live in an environment with tons of humidity like Florida, you might consider the polywood shutter products as an alternative to wood. They are hard to distinguish from one another, so you are not sacrificing appearance over function and you may experience a savings as well. Probably the only drawback to shutters is the dusting chore, but at least you avoid the dry cleaning associated with fabrics.

Woven woods are a beautiful alternative to consider since they come in so many finishes, styles and materials. They can roll, fold, or draw depending on your preference and window dimension and can range from room darkening to light filtering. You also have the option of top down or bottom up to better control light and view.

The newest innovations include shades and verticals in materials that offer privacy, view, and sun control or total sunblock with all of the varieties of applications, textures, and subtle colors you could imagine.

With the advent of volume ceilings in so many new homes, mechanized tracks have been perfected for most all window dressings and can be operated with a simple remote control. They can also be set on timers (like most everything else in our lives) to open and close on a pre-set schedule.

One of my personal favorites for windows is leaded glass. Beveled, obscure, colored, etched…the types of glass are endless as are the patterns and pictures that can be rendered in this timeless expression of art. Plus, they can be installed or simply suspended within the frame. And they can be new creations that reflect your personal style or interests, or they can add a touch of antiquity when selected from the many salvaged pieces available.

If you are renting or leasing a space with windows that need “treatment”, there are many readymade solutions out there in the home improvement stores that are inexpensive alternatives to the custom covering. Draperies, curtains and shades can often be cut down to accommodate differing window sizes and travel with you when you eventually move on. Top treatments, side panels and moldings can be added to whatever window privatization is provided to personalize the windows to your style at very little cost. Just get permission from the owners before you start adding your own touch.
Your ultimate window covering or treatment will ultimately be determined by architectural requirements, budget, and style. Whatever you choose, if it is custom it is costly, so do your research, get several bids, and ask for referrals.

Travel

You may have noticed your Facebook news feed has a new theme: summer vacation. Everyone from your distant cousin to your BFF are posting envy-inducing status updates and photos of their fun in the sun. It’s time you stop living vicariously through social media, and update your own status to: Having a Blast. Whether you’re single and looking to mingle, hoping for the most romantic date this side of the Mississippi, or want to thrill your spouse and kids, I’ve got ideas to get you off of your computer and out into the summer heat.

Flying Solo at Atlantis Paradise Island Resort

Being single on vacation shouldn’t make you want to hide under your oversized sunglasses and beach-hat (though doing so would make you look wildly mysterious). Grab a few fabulous friends for a holiday at Atlantis Paradise Island Resort, where you may arrive with a “single” relationship status but leave with “it’s complicated.”

On the beach of Nassau in the Bahamas, this sprawling mega-resort is Vegas meets a water theme-park, and ensures you’re never lacking for ways to let of steam. Floating along the endless lazy river, lounging by one of the 20 unique swimming areas, or shooting down thrilling high-speed water slides – you’ll feel like you’ve entered a world built for your pleasure. And you haven’t even seen Mandara Spa yet (or the duty-free shops).

With enough bars to make a montage of fuzzy memories, and the adults-only Cain at the Cove pool complete with its private cabanas, one week here could turn into your own sexy scavenger hunt.

A Sweetheart’s Desire at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort

If you’ve gone from posting “Someday my prince will come” to “in a relationship” you’ll love spending a few magical summer days at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort. Taking a boat to the waterfront resort from Downtown Disney, you’ll pass elegant mansions and massive oaks covered in Spanish Moss, setting the tone of a slower-paced and charming American South. Try the laidback lounges at Port Orleans, or amble to the Disney Port Orleans French Quarter for a more jazz-infused experience.

Date night at Disney might include a romantic carriage ride over cobblestoned paths, a candlelit dinner of Southern specialties by the river, and – fireworks in the bedroom. I’m not making promises about your performance, but the headboards of the Royal Guest Rooms at Port Orleans Resort glitter with fiberoptic lights that create your own personal “fireworks” display.

A Menagerie for the Family – SeaWorld

Imagine this photo on your Facebook wall: your tyke or teen posed with a real dolphin. They’ll have automatic bragging rights when they get back to school. SeaWorld mixes these magical animal moments with enough action to satisfy a brood of adrenaline junkies (yes, that’s an enormous rollercoaster and yes, you’re going on it).

Hit rides like the 60 mph Cheetah Hunt and the loop-de-looping Kumba, or treat animal-lovers to a trip into the wild on Rhino Rally and see the 500 different types of feathered friends at Bird Gardens. Another bonus is that this kid-friendly park offers wristbands so parents can write contact info in case you get separated.

Ready to Roll

Don’t be surprised if after your trip is said and done, Facebook friends are popping out of the woodwork to ask for tips and suggestions. If you want to really make your circle of friends jealous – live-Tweet the highlights of your amazing summer vacation. Better yet, don’t. Just enjoy it.

Are You a Driver?

Jaguar has announced the introduction of a all-new Jaguar model called the F-Type. The F-Type is based off the hugely successful concept CX-16 from 2011. The core appeal of Jaguar automobiles is their sporting heart and leading expertise in aluminum construction. Ian Hoblan, Jaguar’s Vehicle Line Director said: “The engineering development of the F-Type has focused on delivering a heightened level of dynamic driving reward. We are excited about our progress to date and are looking forward to soon being able to demonstrate what we have achieved.” All the Jaguar models; the XF, the XJ, and the XK all offer wonderfully fun and accurate driving to the driver. Passengers are bathed in luxurious surroundings with fine leather and wood veneer’s. They have something really special over there in the British Midlands and it is all heading to the USA!

JaguarI have written before about the thrills in driving cars. I have driven them all from Bughatti to F-650 and everything in between. The one common denominator for me when I experience a new car I have never experienced before is joy. Joy in driving dynamics, in coachwork (interiors) and of course does its design stir the soul. Now, this joy of course is different for everyone. I enjoy manufacturers who take risks. I am fortunate to represent to such manufacturers in Fisker and Jaguar. Jaguar makes no ploy at the establishment. It carves its own path in design, function, coachwork and performance. The joy with Jaguar automobiles is widespread which affords us the confidence that our clients will also find their joy within Jaguar.

Ian Callum, Director of design for Jaguar says Jaguar cars are pure in both their purpose and form. From C-Type on through to the modern era Jaguars have always delivered a “driver’s car”. The F-Type will deliver this same purpose and more. This is the first pure sports car from jaguar in many years. The F-Type is coming and will be available in mid-2013. Jaguar of Tampa is accepting pre-order deposits now.

Jaguar of Tampa was recently awarded the prestigious “Pride of Jaguar” award for being one of the top 16 dealers in the country. Jaguar Cars USA was just awarded J.D. Powers recognition for the #2 in quality. Since 2009 Jaguar has won numerous awards for their efforts in delivering joy to its owners. It is time for you to see, feel and experience them for yourself. Jaguar of Tampa is even willing to bring the jungle to you and share our pride. Just call 813-579-2309 for an appointment.

Eco-Friendly Home Extravaganza

Art and Diane Whitney

Art and Diane Whitney

Not long ago, making the eco-friendly choice meant compromise: settling for less than you wanted orpaying more than you should. Fortunately, those days are fading into memory. Today, there are manyways to make environmentally responsible lifestyle and product choices. A-1 Custom Cabinets is proudto offer responsible choices yet still provide the creativity, quality and value our customers expect.

Most consumers are aware of the availability of sustainable fabrics, paint products with low VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), and floor & wall coverings with recycled content. However, many are not aware of “green” products available for your kitchen and bath. For instance, countertops can bemanufactured in sustainable or recycled materials. A-1 Custom Cabinets has beautiful counter-top selections in bamboo (sustainable), recycled glass, and solid surface made with 40% recycled content.

An earth-friendly choice available for cabinetry is Lyptus. This wood is carefully managed for sustainability. It’s fast-growing and yet has the hardness of maple, the grain of mahogany and the warmth of cherry. Lyptus is a naturally-occurring hybrid of eucalyptus which can be harvested in as little as 15 years (vs. 50 to 100 years for traditional hardwoods). It is grown on deforested land reserves that are reclaimed from the Rain Forest and specially maintained to preserve the balance of the ecosystem. Lyptus has a naturally deep, warm coloration that accepts a variety of finishes and a lovely grain pattern that ranges from straight fine patterns, to burls, to faint tiger striping.

To promote “green” awareness, A-1 Custom Cabinets is offering Panache readers a rebate on any Lyptus cabinetry purchased in July or August. Be sure to mention the “Eco-Friendly Home Extravaganza.”

Short Sale: Score may be lowered as little as 50 points and the effect on credit may be as brief as 12-18 months. Only late payments will show on the credit report as there is no specific reporting item for “short sale”. In most cases a loan is typically reported as “paid in full, settled, or paid as negotiated”.

Issue: Deficiency Judgment

Foreclosure: In 100% of foreclosures, the bank has the right to pursue a deficiency judgment. In most cases a foreclosure later sold as an REO will result in a lower sales price and a higher possible deficiency judgment.

Short Sale: In a successful short sale, it is possible to convince the lender to give up the right to pursue a deficiency judgment against the homeowner.

Issue: Can I get a Mortgage in the Future?

Foreclosure: A homeowner who loses a home to foreclosure is ineligible for a Fannie Mae backed mortgage for up to 7 years. In applying for a conventional mortgage, you will be asked if you have had a property foreclosed or done a deed-in-lieu in the last 7 years, which will affect future mortgage rates.

Short Sale: A homeowner who successfully closes a short sale will be eligible for a Fannie Mae backed mortgage within 2 years. A homeowner may apply for an FHA loan immediately if payments are current at the time of the short sale. If homeowner is late on payments, they may be eligible for an FHA loan after 3 years.

Issue: Current and Future Employment

Foreclosure: Employers have the right and are actively checking the credit regularly of employees who are in sensitive positions. A foreclosure in many cases is grounds for immediate reassignment or termination. A foreclosure is one of the most detrimental credit items an applicant can have and in most cases will challenge employment.

Short Sale: A short sale is not reported on a credit report and is therefore not a challenge to employment.

With accurate information and guidance homeowners don’t have to walk away and have long term ramifications. Working with the bank by doing a short sale creates a win-win for all parties involved.

It’s getting better. . . however, our current economy still has many homeowners who are in distress and facing hardships. We have seen the bitter reality that hardship does not discriminate against people for any reason. Homeowners of all income levels are facing challenges of owning a home which has lost significant value due to our recent economic upheaval.

Pilates for Olympians or the Weekend Warrior

July marks the start of the Summer Olympics, inspiring the world with the athleticism and prowess of the participating athletes. How do these Olympians train? In addition to practicing their particular sport, athletes cross train to improve their endurance, strength, agility and flexibility. Often Pilates is part of their regimen.

2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward and Joseph Pilates were both boxers. Joseph Pilates trained professional boxers in England. Ward used Pilates and stated “I use Pilates to strengthen my core, which creates balance and leads to velocity.”

Julia Mancuso who has been deemed “the best American female skier of her generation,” took home a gold-medal in the giant slalom at the 2006 Torina Olympics and was a silver medalist in the 2010 Olympics. Julia used state-of-the-art Pilates equipment during her daily workouts.

Pilates was part of performance enhancing workout preparing Olympic Gold Medalist Sanya Richards for the 2008 Olympic games. A gold medalist in the 4-by-400 relay at the 2004 Olympics and named 2006 athlete of the year by the International Association of Athletics Federation.

Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Natalie Coughlin practices Pilates as part of her training regimen and has been a spokesperson for Balanced Body’s Pilates Arc. “In swimming, speed comes directly from the core so Pilates helps immensely” stated Olympian swimmer Dara Torres.

Olympian Beach Volleyball player Kerri Walsh proclaimed “My favorite core workout is Pilates, which covers the entire core area. Pilates is a must do exercise for volleyball. We need to have very strong core muscles (abs, back, etc)”. Misty May-Treanor has also incorporated twice weekly Pilates equipment training into her training regimen in prior Olympics.

The secret ingredient that gives many Olympic athletes the edge to be the best they can be, keeps them looking great and has enabled them to play long and strong is Pilates and the principles of Pilates. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or a weekend warrior, incorporate Pilates into your workout routine today.

The Sips You Take May be Destroying Your Teeth

Dr. Larry Lieberman

Dr. Larry Lieberman

The beautiful weather we all look forward to is here! It’s a time to dust off the old barbque, enjoy some delicious grill time with family and friends and sip on some cold, thirst quenching soda. Although this image appears heavenly – the soda you are drinking can create a dental nightmare!

I have told my patients for years that besides smoking cigarettes, soda (this includes diet soda too) is the worst thing you can do to harm your teeth. For many people, soft drinks are the beverage of choice. But you may not realize the two-fold damage it is doing to your teeth. First, soft drinks can contain 10-12 teaspoons of sugar per serving. So, when you drink a soda, you are essentially bathing your teeth in liquid sugar. The bacteria that naturally live on your teeth feed on that sugar and produce acid. Without proper care, the acid dissolves the surface of your teeth and creates a cavity.

Second, soft drinks- especially diet sodas- contain phosphoric and citric acid to enhance flavor. The acids wash over your teeth, affecting the entire tooth structure. Over time , they erode the hard, protective enamel, causing your teeth to get thinner and expose the sensitive dentin layer inside your tooth. As your teeth continue to get thinner, the edges can crumble and lose their natural shape. When the enamel is worn away, it exposes the dentin layer to both decay and pain. Tooth enamel that’s lost to decay or erosion won’t grow back. We can repair the damage, but the best solution is prevention.

This is not a problem only for adults. Children and teens who have frequent access to soft drinks can greatly damage their teeth because their teeth are still forming.

Sodas (regular and diet), sports drinks, energy drinks, vitamin waters, fruit juices, teas, blended coffee drinks and wine all contain the sugars that can damage your teeth. A 16-ounce blended coffee drink can contain 500 calories and 69 grams of sugar.

Your best choices for a beverage are milk and or course, water. If you must drink soft drinks – use a straw, do not drink for extended periods of time, do not hold the liquid in your mouth before swallowing, cut down on the amount you consume, and after you drink, rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth. The best decision is to choose the very best thirst quencher. Water has no fat, no caffeine and no acid!

With smarter choices and regular check-ups, you can  protect the health of your teeth for years. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable summer!

It’s Summertime

Dr. Paul Duryea

Dr. Paul Duryea

“It’s summertime when the living is easy” many of us remember that old classic and the memories of past summertime adventures. Getting into this summertime season I had a very interesting question poised to me at a recent new patient consult. I was asked by a young Patients mother that “Wasn’t it true that if the patient is older when we treat them the teeth will stay better in their new position”. According to this Mother this is what had been told to her by friends.

Unfortunately this is another “old wives tale”. So to set the record straight, Age has no direct relationship to long term stability of an Orthodontic end result. What I mean by direct relationship is that the position of the teeth will maintain themselves as long as they are retained, no matter how old one is. I guess one could argue that a young person may not wear their retainers as well as an older individual and hence see more tooth movement. But it boils down to the individual and their wiliness to follow their Orthodontists recommendations. In all the years that I have been in practice I have seen patients that I have treated at the age of 12 and with good retainer wear see perfect stability at the age of 40. In the converse I have seen patients treated at the age of 40 and by 45 their teeth are moving all over the place due to poor retainer wear.

One thing that summer affords us is that getting your braces on now will allow for adjustment to them prior to the beginning of School, and one less thing to be concerned about starting a new school year.

Please call us today for a complimentary consult and “Let’s get something straight”.

Mirror Mirror

Dr. César Lara

Dr. César Lara

Mirror, mirror on the wall – who is the fairest of them all? This is a question from a lady who wanted validation that she was, indeed, the fairest in the land. This childhood fairy tale demonstrates something that we all need – someone to tell us that we have value. For her, it was a mirror talking to her. For us, it’s a little different. We need to talk to the mirror.

Talking to the mirror may be, at first, a little uncomfortable; and the conversation we need to have can be a little difficult until we get accustomed to having it on a daily basis. After all, how many of us truly feel like we are the “fairest in the land”. For many people, there are instead, these old tapes that play over in our head that say we’re not good enough, we’re not attractive, we’re not as good as others. It’s time to re-record those tapes, and the mirror is the tool to help us.

As you look into the mirror, take an objective look at who is looking back at you. There are some really nice features about that image; a nice smile, good complexion, gentle eyes. Now let’s focus on the eyes a little more deeply. On old proverb states “the eyes are the window to the soul”. Let’s look in the window and see what is in there that we really want.

As we are window shopping, there may be many things we would like to have, but we need to focus on those things that are most important to us. Try to find five things. Once we identify five, we begin to bring those things into our personal universe and learn how they are achievable.

At first, the old little voices plant seeds of doubt and tell us that we are silly to even think about it. But we have identified those five things and the old tapes have already lost their power to keep us feeling badly about ourselves. Now our daily exercise routine is to look in that mirror, in those eyes, every day and say “I want…..” whatever the five things are. Always keep the statement positive – do not use “I don’t want”. For example, you may say “I want to weigh 130 pounds, I want to be healthy, I want to feel more joy, I want to be more successful, I want to appreciate what I see in this mirror.” Once we get past the stage when we feel a little silly talking to our reflection, we find that just this simple exercise can empower us to achieve!

During the day, we can look in our car vanity mirror, the workplace restroom mirror….anyplace where we can look through our eyes, into the windows of our soul and touch those things we want. The more we verbalize those wants, the faster those old tapes completely disappear and we find that looking in the mirror is not the negative it once was. In fact, we have learned the power of positive thinking. Now when we wonder “who is the fairest”, we can feel in our heart that we are worth the answer we get in return – “YOU ARE”.

Your Money or Your Life

Dr. James R. Pitts

Dr. James R. Pitts

As the summer gets hotter here in Florida, a few things happen: one, the mercury rises to about 120 degrees, families go on vacations, and the stock market generally takes a siesta.

Typically, the summer months are not as healthy in terms of investment returns. Why this is so is anyone’s guess. However, what is the investor supposed to do? Perhaps we can draw some wisdom from the successful investors of the past.

Benjamin Graham is widely recognized as the inventor of two basic investment disciplines, security analysis and value investing. In 1949 he published the famous book The Intelligent Investor; this has guided many highly successful investors over time. “The investor’s chief problem and even his worst enemy, is likely to be himself.” How true this is. We know, for instance, that we should buy low and sell high, but this doesn’t always occur due to human emotion and poor timing. He also said, “The individual investor should act consistently as an investor and not as a speculator.” You can’t predict the future, but instead you should base your decision on facts.

Peter Lynch, who successfully ran the largest mutual fund in the world, Fidelity Magellan, said, “Know what you own and know why you own it.” Always do your research and periodically evaluate your portfolio moldings.

A current financial guru, Dave Ramsay, was quoted saying, “Financial peace isn’t the acquisition of stuff, it’s learning to live on less than you make, so you can give money back and have money to invest. You can’t win till you do this.” If more of us practiced this principle, then we would not have credit cards, debt problems, bankruptcies, foreclosures, and other financial overextensions.

Robert G. Allen was quoted as saying, “How many millionaires do you know who have become wealthy by investing in savings accounts? I rest my case.” Although this statement was made many years ago, it’s especially pertinent to today’s low interest environment. The extremely low interest rate that savings, money markets, and CDs are yielding does not keep up with inflation. Your spending power is quickly eroded over the years.

Warren Buffet is considered to be one of the most successful investors of all time. He is the second richest man in the United States and has successfully run his company “Berkshire Hathaway” for many years. He said, “We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.” Never chase the pack of the hot stock/ mutual fund of the day. Buffet is also a proponent of buying what he knows and understands. “Never invest in a business you can’t understand.” Also, “I never attempt to make money on the stock market, I buy on the assumptions they could close the market the next day and not reopen it for five years.” Another of his quotes says, “It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you will drift in that direction.” Warren Buffet is a believer in having wise advisors to help him make his decisions.

One of my favorite quotes concerning investing and any decision in life is from Benjamin Franklin. “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Franklin reminded us to do our homework and analysis or have a trusted advisor help you.

What Is Your Credit IQ?

JoAnn Rooney

JoAnn Rooney

A credit score is primarily based on credit report information typically sourced from credit bureaus. Credit scores can affect many aspects of your life, your ability to get a credit card, a mortgage and even a job. Credit can be tricky to understand..

How well do you understand what goes into your credit report and credit score? The following true and false statements may give you a better idea what your credit scoring is all about. Test your knowledge of credit reports and scores to see how much you know;

1. As soon as you pay off an overdue account, the late payments are removed from your credit report. False. Paying the balance of an overdue account is always a good idea. However, missed payments will still show up on your report because they are part of your credit history. Delinquencies of 30 to 180 days will stay on your report for seven years from the date of the missed payment. The good news is that older delinquencies gradually become less of a factor in your score.

2. Filing for bankruptcy will erase the blemishes on your credit report and allow you to start from scratch. False. For people in severe financial distress, declaring bankruptcy may be the only option. However, while a bankruptcy can erase your debts, it will not wipe clean your credit report. Bankruptcies will be noted on your credit report for seven to ten years, depending on the type of bankruptcy you file for.

3. You can request a copy of your own report without lowering your credit score. True. Checking your own credit report will not lower your score. In fact, it’s a good idea to monitor your credit file regularly to make sure that it is accurate. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com for a free credit report.

4. You only need to check your credit report with one of the three credit bureaus. False. While Equifax, TransUnion and Experian use similar formulas when calculating your credit score, each collects its data independently. Therefore, each bureau may have slightly different information in your file, and it’s a good idea to check your report with each of them. These scores can vary greatly from bureau to bureau!

5. Your income has no effect on your credit score. True.

6. A good way of raising your credit score is to obtain several credit cards, even if you don’t plan to use them. False. Using a mix of credit accounts — a mortgage, a car loan and a credit card, for example — and making regular payments on all of them will help you establish a solid credit history. However, opening accounts you won’t use does nothing to build up a positive credit rating. It may even backfire as too much available credit can lower your score. You should only apply for credit cards that you genuinely need.

7. Your credit report and your spouse’s are, and remain, separate reports. True.
8. While it is not easy, achieving a perfect credit score of 850 is possible. True (I’ve yet to see an 850 score in 15 years of originating mortgages).

9. Unpaid library fines and traffic tickets can affect your credit score True. Because cities looking for revenue are sending these cases to collection agencies.

What’s the big deal?

No matter which scoring model lenders use, it pays to have a great credit score. Your credit scores effect whether you get credit or not, and how high your interest rate will be. A better score can lower your interest rate.

The difference in the interest rates offered to a person with a score of 580 and a person with a 740 score can be thousands of dollars on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage. Paying bills on time and paying credit cards in full monthly are the single most important ways to maintaining a good credit score.

Call me if you need advice on how you can increase your credit scores, if you need mortgage advice or information on the HARP 2 refinance program for underwater borrowers.
