Styling Bath on a budget

Before we design your bath on a budget we need to consider some words that may help trigger our inner designer.

1) Style: You want to feel happy, awake, and refreshed in the morning as you get ready to attack the day, and when you return from your busy day you want a quiet relaxing evening in the tub.

2) Functionality: Do you find yourself griping when getting ready in your bath looking for the hairdryer, make up items and perhaps a place to set down your coffee?

3) Size: How big do you want to go? Is it just the vanity that is bothering you? Is it the grout in the tile of your shower? Is your tub area just making you yawn with boredom?

If you write these down, you will begin to see the design actually take place in your brain, while it’s fresh in your mind, just start sketching and jotting down those ideas.

I suggest you start in the vanity area. First inspect you cabinet bottom under the plumbing. Is it durable or can your finger poke thru it? If so you can tear out that bottom, rebuild it or you may have to buy new cabinets.

When searching for countertop remnants for a long vanity, It might be difficult to find a granite remnant that long. If you decide on a Seamless Surface or Formica material, you might need to buy a whole sheet. One tip is to either make one cabinet higher or lower rather than one level. Its looks stylish, but more importantly it’s so easy to find smaller remnants.

Even if you buy just two cabinets space them apart, and build a lower countertop bridge of another color which can be used as a make-up desk as well. If you do not like the uneven cabinet height design, then buy a couple of small granite sections in a lighter color, and two strips of darker color, and have them seamed up to meet your measurements. This way we celebrate the seam and it will look more like a design than a remnant top.

Its easier to find three small scraps than one long slab, Panache Vue is always here to help.

2013 Trends In Pool Construction and Design

Hi Folks, Zac Pease here, Owner/Designer for Ultra Custom Group. I wanted to talk about the expected trends of 2013 in pool construction and design. The Tampa Bay area has varied buildings styles that are reflected by our eclectic neighborhoods. There are Modern contemporary homes, to Southern Craftsman, Mediterranean, French Chateau and Tuscan styles. 2013 home building shows much promise in the Bay area. The builders are constructing beautiful homes in every neighborhood and Ultra Custom Group is here to help you realize all the outdoor living potential that your property has to offer!

Florida is a leader in innovative green building and outdoor living design which reflects Florida’s laid back yet elegant lifestyle. Variable speed pumps make equipment more efficient which in turn saves on energy and water usage. Many recycled materials such as glass and mosaic tiles give the client another green alternative in the building arena.

The style of pool should reflect and compliment the style of home. With that said however, there is lots of room for creative and technological elements even in the most traditional of homes.

Look to fully integrated automation systems that allow homeowners to remotely control pool features from any mobile device. Everything from balancing chemicals to activating water features. Why not begin heating your spa while in rush hour traffic?

Exotic stones continue to be a desirable alternative in place of the commonly used Travertine. Create a beautiful fire feature or a tile design that becomes a centerpiece of conversation. Ultra Custom Group features over 400 varieties of Exotic stones from 19 countries, Porcelain that looks like wood and Resin resembling glass.

The variety of materials available to the consumer is far reaching and Ultra Custom is here to help put them on your home, pool, or outdoor space. The integration of Pool and Outdoor living space is a trend as itself. In the past a pool was a pool, but now people are more inclined to create a full outdoor living space. Pool pavilions, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, organic gardens are great for the total outdoor living experience. Let’s get started on your Design today. Ask Andrew Ashton… LaPosh Salon

In this column, I typically respond to write-in questions from readers on beauty, hair, make-up and the sort; but a recent client consultation made me rethink the topic for this month. During the consultation about a new haircut, I quickly realized that she wasn’t just looking for the “right” cut or color. She wasn’t feeling confident in her appearance and I feared that nothing I gave her would be what she was looking for. This made me sad that not only was this lovely woman unhappy with her current look, she lacked the self esteem because she had become reliant on supermodel and celebrity images as go-to imagery for real life. Many of the household names we see in magazines have been touched up or airbrushed to perfection. And much to our surprise, celebs deal with some of the same struggles and emotions about their looks as we do. While my job is to “make people beautiful,” I also love what I do because it allows people to feel excited and offers them a renewed sense of appearance. I wanted my client to recognize that beauty is not just skin and hair-deep. In the end, I cut and colored her hair and she loved it. She also shared with me that the time I spent with her was even more important than her new ‘do. What started as a consultation turned into a heart-to-heart talk about life and all its challenges. My reward was knowing that she felt happier in her own skin now and that I had played a part. What’s my piece of advice in this column, you ask? There is beauty in everyone and it’s not hard to find. Maybe a new haircut and/or color can help achieve your new look, but inner beauty is just as important in what you see each day in the mirror.

Blessings to all, Andrew Ashton

Get The Skinny On Tampa’s Best Fat Melting Device

Exilis offers targeted treatments for fat reduction, skin tightening, body shaping and anti-aging

With summer approaching, the desire to get beach body ready is impossible to ignore. While we always suggest starting off with a healthy diet and the right amount of exercise, when that combo isn’t enough, there’s always Exilis.

Exilis was the winner of best skin tightening device in 2012 at THE Aesthetic Show, Las Vegas, NV, and has been featured on numerous television programs such as “The View” and “The Doctors”. Exilis uses focused radio frequency (RF) to tighten skin. Thermage is another well-known skin tightening device using RF. The difference between Thermage and Exilis is that Thermage is extremely painful and Exilis feels much like a hot stone massage. The pain of Thermage may also limit how high the settings can be, which may limit results. With Exilis, there is no pain and no downtime. Exilis does require several sessions for a complete treatment, usually 4-6 sessions about a week apart. Each session lasts 20 min to 1 hour depending on how many areas are being treated at each session. The downside with ANY energy based skin tightening device is that the patient must wait for their own collagen to grow and remodel to see the results. Excited about starting to look younger, the wait can be as frustrating as watching grass grow. But in just three months, a visible change does occur and results continue to improve even beyond this. It’s as if the patient is aging backwards as the device actually causes some changes within the skin that are opposite of what occurs with the aging process.

Exilis can not only be used on the face to firm, smooth, and tighten the skin, but it can also be used on the body to address those areas that no amount of working out and dieting will fix. The body hand-piece of the Exilis device not only tightens skin, but also shrinks fatty deposits and allows a very nice non-surgical body contouring. There is no downtime and no pain with Exilis body contouring either. Many patients actually fall asleep during the treatments. Patient satisfaction with Exilis is very high. The body sculpting results become visible much more quickly than the skin tightening, with patients frequently reporting visible changes in the first week. Also, since the fat deposits are being reduced over several sessions though gentle heating, there is no risk of contour irregularity, lumps, gouges, or dimples as can sometimes be seen with poor results in surgical recontouring. There is no garment to wear and no bruising or drainage or potential for infection. The fat just seems to gradually melt away in the areas treated, without any slow down in your activities except for the relaxation during the treatment itself.

When Mama’s Happy, Everyone Is Happy!

Debbie and Larry Lieberman, D.D.S.

Debbie and Larry Lieberman, D.D.S.

Over the years in our home of 3 active boys my wife, Debbie, kept command central in control by juggling sports, school, social calendars and work. The mantra in our home was “when mamma is happy, everyone is happy”! Today we laugh about it, but moms of today juggle so many family responsibilities and set the tone for the home. Not only do they manage the family lives, they very often put their own needs last making sure everyone else’s needs are met. Many times in our dental office I meet moms who are in desperate need of dental treatment but choose to put their children’s needs first. While this is very important, I would like to encourage those moms to think about the model they are setting for their children and somehow find a way to take care of themselves too. I celebrate these moms and invite them in to our dental office to be treated and pampered.

The experience begins the moment you enter our office. Cool, calming, spa colors, a soothing rock waterfall, a coffee bar (that rivals Starbucks) and a warm, smiling face awaits you at check in. Whether you’ve come for your routine hygiene visit or for other dental treatment, your comfort is our prime concern. Using memory foam chair pads, TV and music headphones, sunglasses and a garden view in each treatment room gives you the feeling you’re not in your typical sterile dental office.

For those patients who need a bit more “comfort” in a dental environment we offer several additional options. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available to help relieve dental anxiety. In addition, we are licensed to offer oral and IV sedation, a deeper more relaxing way to get through your dental visit. Very often dental anxiety can be helped simply with calm, soothing music, a dark pair of sunglasses and a caring staff who is attentive to your needs.

Of course we are here to meet all of your dental needs – teeth whitening, bonded fillings, veneers, crowns, root canal, dentures, implants and implant restorations- are some of the services we offer. We even have 6 different lasers to make your dental treatment easier, faster and more comfortable. For those busy and with time constraints we can make Cerec crowns in a single visit. To compliment this we also offer BruxZir Solid Zirconia crowns which are stronger and a beautiful alternative to conventional crowns. If you’d like to pamper yourself we can do that too. If your smile isn’t all that you’d like it to be we have many cosmetic options to help. If your teeth aren’t as straight as you’d like them to be we have options to help straighten them. If your appearance is aging faster than you’re ready for we are proud to offer Botox and Dermal Fillers to enhance your appearance.

Our philosophy has always been and continues to be to keep our service and approach to excellent patient care a top priority. I am extremely proud of my staff that has helped me to make this a reality. I look forward to answering your questions and to serving any of your dental needs.

The Clinical Option Of HCG In Your Journey To A Healthier And Thinner You.

Dr. César Lara

Dr. César Lara

With the summer months approaching and longer sun filled days enticing us all to enjoy the beach, our desire to get our bodies fit for swimsuits is very real.

There is a clinical tool available to facilitate a more robust start or restart in the losing of inches. Consider this option not only for swimsuit season, but as one begins to implement a long-term strategy of lifestyle modification and ultimately, transformation. The option is the use of HCG.

HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, which is a hormone that women produce in significantly high levels during pregnancy (500,000 to 1,000,000 units / day). It is generally believed that its purpose is to ensure that regardless of whether the mother eats or not, the unborn baby will get its nutrition via a facilitated and more direct breakdown of fat, hence creating a constant source of calories.

HCG in small amounts (100 to 300 units / day) has been used in both genders since the mid 1950s to aid in weight loss. Thousands of persons swear by the results that they have achieved. However it has been very controversial, as the original Italian physician who first promoted it for weight loss also tied it to an extremely low calorie diet of 500 calories / day.

The scientific community has done studies that showed that the amount of weight lost with a 500 calorie plan was similar between groups of people taking HCG and those not taking HCG, hence a large majority have concluded that HCG is no better than a placebo. Further clinical evidence advices against such restricted 500-calorie diets due to potential starvation mode elicited in the body, in addition to concerns of safety.

On the other hand there is now clinical evidence that it is not just the amount of weight loss that needs to be compared; but also the source of weight loss that is important. Specifically it is the desire to lose the “ FAT” weight and not the “MUSCLE “ weight, and if someone is put on a very low calorie diet, the problem is that the person will lose too much muscle, (lean body mass) which is in direct proportion to that person’s metabolic rate. In addition, recent studies have clearly concluded that improving and increasing lean body mass directly decreases insulin resistance, which is the culprit in obesity. HCG treated patients have shown that the amount of muscle loss is half the amount as those following a similar diet but without HCG.

The story that we hear and see often is that a person on an HCG protocol will noticeably see inches shrink on the areas of their body where the fat accumulates the most. It is especially helpful in persons with the “pear shaped” body where the weight is accumulated in the hips and thighs. With many diets, the “pear shaped” body type will many times find their upper body, especially their face, begin to look “too thin” despite the fact that their lower half still has significant excess. The volume of a pound of fat is significantly larger than the volume of a pound of muscle, and hence, as more fat is released, the more volume or inches one’s body shrinks.

HCG is a regulator of hormones, which is of great value in patients with excess weight, as their condition is an expression of an imbalance in their hormonal state. Specifically, HCG regulates many hormones including thyroid and the sex hormones, most notably testosterone. It is used clinically in males to help increase their own production of testosterone, and it is also used in females seeking treatment for infertility. The improvement in the testosterone levels of those on HCG most likely is the reason why muscle weight loss is minimized as the testosterone turns on an anabolic state in the body whereby it promotes muscle development.

In our practice we use mainly the injectable type of HCG. There has been controversy regarding the use of oral forms as recent studies have shown there are no detectable levels of HCG except when the injectable type is used. The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) has been warning consumers that the

Homeopathic HCG products typically marketed as weight loss aids, and sold via the Internet and stores, usually in the form of drops and pellets, are illegal and unproven.

As in any nutritional plan that helps shed of the excess weight, keeping it off is the real story. In our practice, we see a large amount of patients that had done what they thought was HCG in the past and obtained good results, but were not maintainable and they regained their weight plus more. Of course this story resonates with all nutritional plans as most people doing diets only focus on “you can eat this and not that “ for a certain period of time. Afterwards they resume their usual and customary habits, which lead them to gain weight initially and will continue to do so always.

However with those patients doing a very low calorie diet on their own and taking what they thought was HCG, it would make sense that they would initially lose the weight dramatically as 500 calories is drastic. The problem is their weight was lost not only in fat, but also in larger amounts of muscle, which subsequently lowered their metabolism and predisposed them to insulin resistance. That in turn, primed them for quick and unhealthy regain, even though their caloric intake was still low.

In my experience, when HCG is used with close medical management of a very low calorie nutritional plan, it can facilitate a great start. It is used in cycles of four or six weeks; and in between cycles, the nutritional plan is adjusted. Some people do a cycle to get a good start and develop the confidence to be on their journey to a healthy weight. Others use a cycle once they reach a plateau in their weight loss journey, and many see the benefits of helping reshape their body by facilitating the loss of inches in the stubborn areas of their body.

A healthy lifestyle transformation is the goal of any nutritional plan that helps release excess weight, and is ultimately the true measure of success. A successful plan should not only focus on the amount of pounds lost, but more importantly on its inherent ability to help transition into a healthier and maintainable weight. This requires the understanding that it is not a quick fix but a long-term commitment where education, guidance and support are paramount.

Although there are many tools to help aid in our journey to a healthier thinner self, the tool that is the most important is your mind and the thoughts that are elicited every single day. Hence despite great opportunities to help in the rebalancing of our hormones, and improvement in insulin resistance, in my humble opinion, the real goal is the ability to maintain that healthier weight, not a quick fix. That goal can only be achieved if you give yourself the love and commitment to change your lifestyle and recognize that all is possible. You just need to visualize, believe and work at seeing it actualize.

Viva La Vida Aviva

Aviva Drescher

Meet Real Housewives’ of New York Aviva Drescher

Having joined the cast of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York in season five, the beautiful and charming Aviva is so much more than what you see on the hit reality show. She is a wife, mother to four precious children, a REAL housewife, a business woman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Aviva is “Living the Life!”

Passionate about everything she does, but extremely evident in her charity work for amputees with The One Step Ahead Foundation. Aviva lost her leg at age six and it has never stopped her from accomplishing anything and everything she sets her mind to. Strong and determined, this lady is more beautiful on the inside than she is on the outside. After the recent Boston Marathon bombings, she opened her heart to the victims, that’s just what she does.

How did you get involved with the Real Housewives of New York?

Through a mutual friend of Bethenny Frankel’ and the rest is history!

What sets you apart from the other housewives?

Each one of us is different in many ways. I sometimes feel like a goldfish swimming with the sharks. I was a rookie when I came on board; the other ladies are much shrewder than I am. I don’t feel like I’m a celebrity nor am I a diva. My intention was to make great television, unfortunately for the sake of drama; we are not always represented in our true form, don’t believe everything you see. My biggest reason for wanting to be on the show was to inspire other amputees, to be their voice.

What do you do for fun?

We have close friends that we enjoy spending time with and celebrating joyous occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Who or what is most important to you, personally and professionally?

My family is number one! After that, my charities and the work I do daily for amputees.

What is your most memorable Housewives’ experience?

The day I met Andy Cohen! Not only is he the executive producer of the show, but a wonderful human being.

When you were five years old, what was your dream to be when you grew up?

A ballerina

Aviva Drescher and FamilyWhat are your personal and professional mottos?

Personal would have to be “why be normal, everyone interesting has a past.” Professional is “Cease the day, life is not a dress rehearsal!”

Three words that best describe you are:

Silly, Assertive and Compassionate

Who do you owe your success to?

Any good that I am today, comes from positive reinforcement, love and encouragement from my parents and my husband

Have most of your dreams come true so far?

Yes, even more than I ever dreamed possible!

When Aviva was six years-old, she was in a farm accident when her left foot got severely hurt at a friend’s upstate New York dairy farm. A few months later her leg was amputated as a result of that accident. Aviva has never let this tragedy define who she is.

Aviva has a solid education. She attended New York’s The Fieldston School as a child and went on to earn a Bachelors of Arts degree from Vassar College, a Masters in French Literature from New York University and a Juris Doctorate from The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

At a chance meeting at Bed Bath & Beyond, Aviva a single mother at the time met Investment Banker Reid Drescher as their young children played together in the aisles. It was only a matter of time before the two got married and grew their family together. The Dreschers now have the quintessential contemporary modern family with four children – Harrison, 11, Veronica, 10, Hudson, 5, and Sienna, 2.

Aviva is also passionate about working with different philanthropies. Whether it is her role as the National Spokesperson for One Step Ahead, an organization for amputees, her work with Cancer Schmancer/Trash Cancer alongside her cousin Fran Drescher, Live4Life a charity that raises funds for Melanoma research and recently signing on as the ambassador for the So Gay So What Campaign (part of the Shine Out Music Festival) as a straight ally. Aviva continually teaches her family the importance of giving back.

Steve got involved in the jewelry business because he saw a need for a fine jewelry store that provided superior service while keeping quality high and prices below what was being offered almost 30 years ago and even today. During the past 30 years and still going strong, Steve and his staff have satisfied over 250,000 happy customers from all over the country! The Gold & Diamond Source is unlike many other jewelry stores, in Tampa Bay or anywhere else! The newly redesigned 10,000 sq. ft. building is like Disney World for those who love jewelry, and we’re not talking Mickey Mouse watches here! The Gold & Diamond Source carries the inventory of ten normal jewelry stores combined with some of the most experienced, professional and friendly staff in the jewelry industry. Their selection of diamonds is truly breathtaking and can be a bit overwhelming for the first time diamond buyer. That’s where Steve, Julie and their staff come in to assist you. You will find all cuts of diamonds such as Round, Princess, Radiant, Emerald, Pearl, Heart, Marquise and Trillion cut in various sizes, colors and clarities. They also carry pieces created by the top designers in the jewelry industry such as Sethi Couture, Natalie K, Peter Storm Chamilia in addition to a huge selection of Fancy Yellow Diamonds. The best part is, there is a diamond waiting for you at Gold & Diamond Source to fit every budget. Gold & Diamond Source also offers a lifetime trade in policy on diamond solitaries and diamond earrings.

In addition to the family business and the charity work, Steve is also a member of the Jewelers Board of Trade, Jewelers Vigilante Committee and the Better Business Bureau. We asked Steve what is his most memorable or interesting work related experience was. “Working with Domestic Violence victims and helping them start new lives” he stated.

Steve’s favorite part of owning the business is having his family work alongside him. The Weintraub family is an extremely close knit family, and that’s exactly how Steve and Julie like it. “We believe in family and spend as much time with each other as possible including at least one entire family vacation once a year. Also, our work through our non-profit Charity, Hands Across the Bay is our way of paying things forward to this great Community and all the wonderful things it has brought to us. We consider it an honor to be able to give back in any way we can.” Because Steve and his family have been blessed in so many ways, they continue to give back over and over again and have taught their children the same. Not only is family his number one priority, but the extended families he and Julie have adopted through all of their charity work. Three words that best describe Steve and his business are honest, caring & professional. His heart is forever overflowing with kindness and generosity, especially to those less fortunate. Steve told us he owes his success to his wife Julie and his family, the entire staff of Gold & Diamond Source, Hands Across the Bay & of course his dad, Norman Weintraub Sr.

Never Has There Been Such a Devoted Sister

Hailey Scheinman is eight years old and lives in Clearwater. She is a second grader at Leila G. Davis Elementary School and especially loves reading and science. Her twin sister, Olivia, is her favorite person in the world! Last summer, the girls’ story was featured in “The Best Sister” article in the Tampa Bay Times. Hailey has been playing soccer for five seasons in the Clearwater Chargers league. She plays acoustic guitar and recently performed a solo at her second grade play performance. Her love for art began at a very young age and she is always working on something creative.

In February of 2012, Hailey received the Pinellas County School Young Hero Award in recognition for the fundraising efforts she has done for Olivia. Hailey was chosen as a Bay News 9 Everyday Hero and was the recipient of the WEDU Be More Inspiring Rising Star Award. Most recently, she was nominated for the St. Joseph Hospital’s Kids Are Heroes Award.

Hailey plays an integral part in Livy’s Hope, her family’s organization, which brings hope to the lives of children with medical needs and their families. She presents the Livy’s Hope story with her family at schools and at The Family Café Conference. One day she would like to be a professional artist and musician, participate in the Olympics and write a book!

To find out more information about Livy’s Hope, please visit

www.livyshope.com.

Panache: Being so young, what drives you more than anything else?

Hailey: My sister, Olivia, because she is always inspiring me, reminds me to never give up and gives me the biggest smiles.

Panache: How do you decide what projects to work on for Livy’s Hope?

Hailey: I started making and selling paintings because I love art. I knew that Livy’s therapies were expensive and I wanted to help out any way that I could. I also really enjoy making jewelry and decided to start designing bracelets to sell. Now I am enjoying photography and will be putting my photos on note cards.

Panache: How much time do you spend on your projects and which is your favorite?

Hailey: Time? This is a difficult question. It depends on what I am making. Paintings have taken me from a few hours to a couple of weeks to do. I can string a bracelet very quickly but what takes time is picking out what to put together. My favorite painting is the Tuscan Landscape because I loved making the poppies and trees and blending the colors in the background. I can’t pick a favorite bracelet because I love almost all of them!

Panache: If you won a large amount of money, what would be the first thing you would do with it?

Hailey: Can I make a pie chart? 40% would go to Smile Train because I want to help children who need cleft palate surgery since seeing it in a magazine, 25% would go to Livy for therapies and medical things, 20% would go in the bank and 15% would go to something reasonable like a bike or book.

Panache: What do you and Olivia do for fun?

Hailey: We love to snuggle together on the couch or in bed. We watch Shark Tank and Dinosaur Train together. Just being together, reading to her and being close to her is fun.

Panache: A little secret about you that very few people know?

Hailey: I can’t tell you because it wouldn’t be a secret anymore!

Panache: What is your favorite motto?

Hailey: It only takes one person to change the world!

Panache: What would you like to achieve by age 16, 21 and as a grownup?

Hailey: At 16 I will have to learn to drive even though I don’t want to. At 21 I would like to have one of my paintings hanging in a museum and as a grownup, I would love to have a family.

Panache: You’re biggest accomplishment thus far?

Hailey: Winning the “Young Hero Award” for Pinellas County Schools because I received it for doing something for Livy.

Panache: If you could have one dream or wish granted, what would it be?

Hailey: I would wish for a cure for Epilepsy because Livy wouldn’t have shakies (seizures) anymore. I love her just the way she is, even in a wheelchair, because that is who she is but I get worried when Livy has the shakies and I would like them to go away forever.

Panache: What three words best describe you?

Hailey: Empathetic, Happy, and Friendly

Panache: Who and what is most important to you and why?

Hailey: Livy, because she is my inspiration and I have loved her and have known her longer than anyone else has, even before our mom and dad!

Outdoor Kitchen Countertops, What should I choose?

Gene McDonald “The Countertop Rock Star”

Gene McDonald “The Countertop Rock Star”

So, you are thinking about building an outdoor kitchen? This idea of yours is a great way to enhance resale value. We already know the kitchen is the command center of any home for potential buyers, so what do you think that potential buyer would do if they walk out into the backyard and see another kitchen? You can see them smile now as if they are visualizing all the Good Times to come, watching the kids play outside while cooking as friends and family are laughing and enjoying the great outdoors.

Whether you choose to call this a Backyard Bistro or an Outdoor Oasis, We need to consider outdoor countertops?

Outdoor kitchens used to be a Luxury, nowadays its mainstream especially here in Tampa Bay; we realize the backyard is basically another room. When Choosing Outdoor Countertops, Durability must come first, and looks second. Let’s take a look at a few of these materials to see what may work for your lifestyle.

Granite: I am sure you heard this is the best option from everyone. Most professionals know that not all granite is the same, and although it may be durable, there are other concerns. Dark Granites may get so hot from the sun that nobody will want to rest their forearms on. Some may even get a bad burn and spoil their beautiful Saturday. Granites with many grains may have epoxies and fillers inside those grains that may not like the sun. Raise these concerns with your granite fabricator and if they disagree with my statement, get it in writing. Lighter stones may be the best to defend heat, but then the stains may show if not properly maintained. Last month’s issue of Panache Vue I wrote an article on healthy Countertops with some tips on Sealers. That may also help you decide on how to protect your beautiful granite.

Concrete: Concrete is a durable surface with many color options and design flexibility with items to mix in. Concrete countertop artists can actually add nice veining and designs. Just like granite, the lighter the color, the cooler the top, the smoother the texture, the more stain resistant it is, the better the sealer the easier the clean-up.

Recycled Glass: there are many brands out there of Recycled Glass tops, some are made with resin and some are made of Concrete. Make sure you know the difference in durability; they look the same but react differently to the elements. The tops made with resin need to be covered from direct sunlight, but have the benefit of being non-porous for more stain resistance. The Concrete mixes can be in direct sunlight, the glass might get hot to touch. Brands like Vetrazzo are stained dark and will not fade from direct sunlight, many may tell you stained concrete will fade, that may be true when staining concrete is not done by a professional. Vetrazzo backs up this statement with a warranty. Brands like Icestone the color is mixed in the cement, so they may have more options for you with color.

Glass Tops: I know many think Glass will break. It will break just as much as granite would. However, you may want to get to know which type of Glass to use, Glass Tops come very thick and have nice chiseled edges or designs that can be artistically painted underneath. Glass2 is a new brand of recycled glass fused together which is great for outdoors but is still in testing stages to be in direct sunlight.

Avonite or Corian Surfaces: The lighter colors will stay cool and darker colors will fade in time. it has been used in many outdoor applications such as playground fixtures, wall cladding on the exterior of buildings, and Pool surrounds. Many of these pictures and data can be found by simply searching online.

Avonite Polyester Surfaces: this is a material that is outstanding but would need to be covered and can withstand the elements as it is non-porous. The designs are endless with this material.

Polymer King Starboard ST: this material is mostly used for outdoor cabinetry and comes in many colors. This material can be made into a cool durable countertop with using multiple colors in edge treatment and backsplash options.

Other materials available are tile (think about the grout though), Metals like copper and stainless, Slate, Soapstone, Teak, Quartz, and Honed Marble. Remember it’s the Design application not the material that will fail.

I really hope this article helped you extend the celebration of your home to a Backyard Oasis filled with many friends and family smiling at the beautiful weather of Tampa Bay. Reading Panache Vue in your Backyard Oasis…ahhhh it doesn’t get much better than that.

An established leader in bathroom remodeling

Art & Diane Whitney

Art & Diane Whitney

As an established leader in bathroom remodeling, clients turn to A-1 Custom Cabinets for advice on today’s most popular styles. It may be small in size, but it is huge to home owner satisfaction. Bathrooms have become the most spurge worthy room in the house. Often used as an area to relax, distress and escape—today’s bath is now spa-like.

Here are some of the top trends for 2013:

Surprising color—Even if you don’t want to paint, adding color to your bath is as easy as changing your towels or adding accessories. The Art Deco era of the 1920’s is an emerging inspiration, with oxblood being one of the most dramatic colors this year. A perfect balance between rich chocolate and deep garnet, it can be a great wall color or perfect accent color to gray.

Updated plumbing fixtures—Undermount sinks and vessel sinks are now focal points, and shower curtains are being replaced by simple glass enclosures with no visible metal trim. Over-the-top updates range from steam showers with multiple shower heads to commodes that sense when you walk in the room and lift the lid.

Customized cabinetry—Medicine cabinets have become a thing of the past, replaced by organized pullout drawers in the vanity (almost like spice racks used to outfit kitchen drawers). Full height cabinets or freestanding custom armoires house stacked towels, pullout drawers, TVs and can serve as linen closets to keep the bathroom as self-contained as possible.

This is where A-1 Custom Cabinets shines. We are experts at personalizing cabinetry to meet your individual needs. We also have a variety of options that allows us to fit within any budget. Your new bathroom is only a phone call away. Let our experienced designers turn your bath into a spa-like retreat.

Panache People to Know – Leanne Cross, M.D.

Leanne Cross. Photography by Don Shepherd XOPIXO

Leanne Cross. Photography by Don Shepherd XOPIXO

Panache: Why did you choose this business or line of work?

Leanne: As both an artist, and a physician who is able to listen to and identify with my patients, this career really chose me.

Panache: What is your primary role or duty in your company?

Leanne: As co-owner of Lecada Medical Artistry, I perform all facial injectables. My business partner, Dana Martinez, manages the administrative duties which allows me the freedom to focus on the artistic and clinical side of the practice.

Panache: What sets you apart from your competition?

Leanne: My ability to assess and treat the face as a whole. Maintaining balance gives the most natural-looking results, and I believe this is why my work has received so much recognition.

Panache: What would you be doing now if it weren’t for your business, taking money out of the equation?

Leanne: I might be an aerial artist for Cirque du Soleil. There is nothing like the feeling of soaring through the air, combined with constantly improving and challenging yourself.

Panache: What do you do for fun?

Leanne: I play with my daughters (Ellery, almost 20, USF senior and talented amateur photographer, and Emily, who just turned 7). I draw pencil portraits, do flying trapeze, invent gadgets, ride my motorcycle, and play with my pet squirrel.

Panache: A little secret about you that would shock those who don’t know you!

Leanne: I have no credit cards and I don’t watch TV. I love my artwork so much that I would do facial injectables for free if I could. Also, if I am running errands and I do something extra, I will add it to my list after the fact, just for the satisfaction of crossing it off.

Panache: What are your personal and professional mottos?

Leanne: Personally: Another physician once said of me, “There are ‘glass is half empty’ people’ and there are ‘glass is half full’ people. You are a ‘what we have here is a surplus of glass… We should be selling glass!’ person”.

Professionally: If you work with integrity, treat people right and always do your best, you don’t need to fear competition.

Panache: Have you achieved all or most of your dreams thus far?

Leanne: Yes, daily. My dreams involve living each moment to the fullest, learning continually, treating people with kindness, not being too critical of myself or others, and always trying to leave the world a better place than the way I found it.

Ask Andrew Ashton… LaPosh Salon

Andrew Ashton - La Posh Salon

Andrew Ashton - La Posh Salon

Dear Andrew Ashton,

My daughter’s hair is very long and she is interested in donating it to “Locks For Love.”  What are the requirements from donating hair to that organization?

Linda, Oldsmar

Dear Linda,

That’s wonderful that your daughter would like to donate her hair to “Locks For Love!”  In order for her donation to be used for a youth-specific wig, your daughter will need to provide 10 inches of non-bleached hair.  The hair may be color treated but cannot be bleached.  Hair can also be donated if it is less than 10 inches in length, but this hair will be used toward the creation of an adult wig.  Please come by LaPosh Salon as we would be happy to help your daughter with sending off her generous donation.

Dear Andrew Ashton,

I am stuck in a hair rut! With warm weather arriving, I would love some ideas of ways I could wear my hair up and still be on trend.  Hair help now!

Alicia, Tampa

Dear Alicia,

If your hair is very straight, you may want to give you hair a little bit of ‘bend’ with a curling iron or velcro/hot rollers.  One simple and stylish look is a take on the basic ponytail. Here’s how you can achieve it: Put some back combing (or teasing) in the crown of your head, then pull the hair back into a low pony tail.  If you want a part in the front, put that in first then pull everything back into the low pony tail.  The pony tail can be off to one side or centered, but the key is to keep it low.  Take the pony tail and loosely wrap it around itself.  Don’t worry about how organized it is – just that it is balanced and secure with bobby pins.  For a bit more youthful look, pull out a section of hair in the front before securing in the pony tail.  Braid this section and then secure back into the finished bun.  Remember, the key to this look is to ensure its not perfect so have fun with it!

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Leanne Cross, MD

Leanne Cross, MD

Non-surgical rhinoplasty, or the non-surgical “nose job”, is one of the highest satisfaction procedures that I perform. By the time a patient seeks medical advice for a nose bump or shape that he or she “just can’t stand”, the belief is usually that costly, risky, painful surgery is the only answer. In a very large proportion of cases, however, the actual irregularity in the nose is mild enough that simple recontouring with an injectable filler is all that is needed, and it can be performed in the office in just a few minutes, with minimal discomfort, virtually no downtime, and at a tiny fraction of the cost of a surgical option. The recontouring can be performed with either temporary or permanent filler, with many patients selecting a 1-2 year temporary filler initially, to ensure that they will like the results, then adding permanent filler gradually as the temporary filler begins to fade. The technique is performed with topical numbing and only a couple mild needle sticks are felt. There is mild to moderate swelling for a few days, for which ice can be applied, and if the bridge of the nose is injected, the patient must avoid wearing glasses for a week or more. The patient returns for evaluation and possible fine-tuning of the results in two weeks, which is generally included in the initial cost. The most commonly treated issue is a “bump” on the nose, which is treated by adding a small amount of volume above and below to softly blend the raised area and straighten the profile of the nose. A nose which is considered by the patient to be too round or too flat can be improved by adding definition to the tip of the nose. In some cases, the tip of the nose can actually be raised slightly with filler. Also, some curvatures and “dents” can also be corrected. Each nose is different and each patient has different goals, so an individualized consultation is needed to have your goals and desires addressed. Most people are surprised at how much improvement can be gained by non-surgical methods when it comes to the nose, so speak to your injector before assuming your case is beyond a non-surgical approach. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Pilates for Golf

Hit the ball farther, straighter and more accurately with less chance of injury…

Suncoast Pilates - Palm Harbor, Florida

Whether twisting the body on a drive, squatting down to measure a putt or leaning over to pick up a ball, golfers are constantly torquing their bodies. Golf requires repeating the same essential movements. As a result some muscles become overused and others weaken, causing an imbalance. For a golfer, muscle imbalances can affect the legs, hips, arms, shoulders, and the lower back. It can also affect one’s game, particularly for those over the age of 50. Drives may be shorter and less accurate, stamina may decrease, and the potential for debilitating strains, pulls and tears becomes much higher. Many golfers – from weekend warriors to the game’s elite like Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam have turned to Pilates as an essential training tool that keeps the body in balance and actually improves performance.

Why Pilates?

Pilates is based on movement from the center of the body, as are most shots in golf. It strengthens the center of the body, also known as the core (the trunk, shoulder girdle and pelvis). Core strength can improve hip rotation, range of motion in the shoulders and back stability, leading to more powerful and accurate golf shots. Pilates is a full body exercise that works all muscles and is easy on the joints. The end result is a flexible, symmetrically muscled body that is strengthened from the inside out.

Pilates helps you:

  • Build up the back muscles evenly
  • Elongate and align the spine for better stability
  • Strengthen the abdominals
  • Increase overall flexibility, strength, and balance
  • Increase range of motion in hips and shoulders
  • Enhance concentration through focused breathing

A stronger and more stable core helps golfers:

  • Attain an optimal backswing and follow-through with increased range of motion in shoulders
  • Get more distance and power because of added hip and torso flexibility
  • Have a stronger and bigger hip turn for greater power through rotation
  • Create a smoother and more powerful swing due to evenly conditioned back muscles
  • Maximize balance and alignment while rotating
  • Decrease fatigue because of less strain on the body
  • Hold a body position long enough to play through a shot
  • Play without pain!

Diabesity

Dr. César Lara

Dr. César Lara

It affects one out of every two persons. This condition makes people sick, fat, tired and eventually limits their life and livelihood. It causes heart disease, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, infertility, dementia, sexual dysfunction, cancers and many other life limiting problems. Diabesity refers to the process and continuum from mildly elevated glucose and insulin levels to the full-blown diagnosis of Diabetes. It is in direct correlation to the degree of insulin resistance. Eighty percent of overweight persons are affected by it along with forty percent of persons with normal weight (skinny fat people who are normal weight but metabolically fat).

Insulin resistance develops as a consequence of social, genetic and environmental factors but its primary driver is the food we eat. The main offenders are the simple, refined and processed carbohydrates like pasta, bread, rice, and most starches, along with the use of rapidly observing sugars and liquid calories. These foods increase our cellular glucose and insulin levels and over a period of time, the cells develop resistance to insulin. In turn the pancreas produces more insulin to process the normal and elevated glucose levels. Insulin although necessary for life at normal levels, when elevated causes disease, rapid cellular aging and is the strongest fat making hormone in our bodies.

The good news is that diabesity is completely reversible. Insulin resistance is propagated by the persistent and progressive elevation of blood glucose, which in turn is elevated as a consequence of the high glucose producing foods we eat.

The key to the reversal of diabesity is first and foremost understanding and appreciating that regardless of the state of health that one may be experiencing, we have the power and ability to effect a positive change if we so desire and commit to the change we want. The mind and the thoughts we nurture and listen to color our experience and influence the creation of the life we live.

What we eat directly influences the cellular function of the human body and to reverse Diabesity requires that we focus our life’s journey on incorporating a healthier life style, where we make smarter choices in the foods we put in our mouth.

The goal with proven scientific evidence is to stop eating the foods that create the high glucose surges that are making us ill and instead focus on a nutritional plan where we eat more lean proteins like chicken, fish and tofu. Our plates should be full of color with different vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains. These will complement a healthier choice.

Exercise, especially in our sedentary society is extremely important. Although aerobic exercise like walking, biking, treadmill, jogging are mentally and physically helpful as it relates to diabesity, anaerobic exercise like weight training, where the goal is to increase lean body mass has been shown to be very valuable in decreasing insulin resistance.

As we incorporate a lifestyle of a less carbohydrate load to our bodies and begin to increase our lean body mass, not only will our waistlines shrink but more importantly, the insulin resistance will resolve and your sense of well being and energy will return.

Supplements that will reinforce and strengthen your path to resolve diabesity are:

  1. Omega fish oils with a daily EPA/DHA of 2500-5000 mg
  2.  Vitamin D-3 with optimal blood levels around 70
  3. Alpha Lipoic acid 150-300 mg twice daily
  4. Chromium Polynicotinate 200-400 mcg daily
  5. Green tea
  6. A good multivitamin and biotin
  7. A prescription medicine that is very helpful is Metformin.

The supplements that are best for an individual should be decided through a medical consultation.

Other factors that are important components of a healthier lifestyle are:

  1. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water daily.
  2. Sleeping an average of 7-8 hours per night.
  3. Stop drinking or eating foods whose list of ingredients reflect chemicals made in a lab, or ingredients you do not recognize.
  4. Whenever possible and as often as possible buy and eat organically grown foods and keep away from genetically modified foods (GMO).
  5. Stress increases cortisol levels in our bodies, which in turn increases insulin resistance. You need to be mindful of the stress you experience or are exposed to and remember to breathe and engage in stress management techniques or exercises that will help keep you alert and focused and not overwhelmed. Yoga and meditation are excellent choices.

You have the power to change, so visualize the life you want, the health you desire; practice reinforcing a belief in the positive outcome that is to come and let life’s miraculous creative ways actualize in the life you live.
